:''This page is about the hit song recorded by Manfred Mann's Earth Band; for the Cozy Tapes song see Cozy Tapes Vol. 1: Friends.'' "The Runner", also called simply "Runner", is a song written by Canadian rock musician Ian Thomas, his version released in 1981 on the album of the same name. It was also recorded by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, a group known for making hits of reworked cover songs, and released as a single in 1984. It reached number 22 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 in the US. The Song Ian Thomas was a moderately successful artist in Canada, whose songs have been covered by bigger artists a number of times. He was inspired to write this song about Terry Fox, a Canadian hero who set off on a run across the country on one good leg and a prosthetic leg, having lost the other due to cancer. The run was to raise awareness of cancer and seeking funding for cancer research. Unfortunately, Fox only made it half-way through because he had to end his run due to medical con ... Manfred Mann's Earth Band
Manfred Mann's Earth Band are an English rock band formed by South African musician Manfred Mann. Their hits include covers of Bruce Springsteen's " For You", "Blinded by the Light" and "Spirit in the Night". After forming in 1971 and with a short hiatus in the late 1980s/early 1990s, the Earth Band continues to perform and tour. History Formation Keyboardist Manfred Mann started in the 1960s with the self-titled band that had such hits as "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" and Bob Dylan's " The Mighty Quinn" and then moved on to jazz fusion-inspired Manfred Mann Chapter Three before forming the Earth Band in 1971. Feeling that Chapter Three had suffered from too many self-imposed rules, being frustrated with mostly only playing Mike Hugg's compositions and not being an economically feasible venture (due to the number of musicians involved) were all reasons for forming the new group, which was open to songs from outside the band (like Mann's earlier groups) and developed due to the differ ... Budapest Live
''Budapest Live'' is an album released in 1984 by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The album was recorded on the "Somewhere in Europe" tour in 1983 in support of the " Somewhere in Afrika" album, and despite its title, also featured recordings from the Dominion Theatre in London. It was the final Earth Band album to appear on the Bronze label and also the last album recorded with Steve Waller and Matt Irving. The album has long since been criticized by fans for being radically edited down from the actual gig length, thereby losing a lot of live staples ("Martha's Madman", "You Angel You") and many songs now having instrumental passages shortened or completely removed ("Davy's on the Road Again", "Mighty Quinn" and "Demolition Man", the latter being around ten minutes in concert). The cassette release added two more recordings from the concert - parts 1 and 2 of the "Africa Suite" and "Don't Kill It Carol". The album was not released in the United States, but broadcast on the King Bis ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
