Westend (Berlin)
Westend () is a locality of the Berlin borough Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf in Germany. It emerged in the course of Berlin's 2001 administrative reform on the grounds of the former Charlottenburg borough. Originally a mansion colony, it is today a quite densely settled, still affluent territory adjacent to Berlin's inner city in the east. Geography Westend is situated west of Berlin's inner city on Spandauer Berg, the northern peak of the sandy Teltow plateau between the river valleys of Spree and Havel. It is centered on Theodor-Heuss-Platz, a large square, from where the Heerstraße arterial road, part of the Bundesstraße 2 and Bundesstraße 5 highways, runs west towards the Berlin city limits. In the west and north, Westend borders on the Berlin Spandau borough. The locality also includes the neighbourhoods of Neu-Westend and Ruhleben, a suburban housing area of the 1920s. Spandau () is a locality (''Ortsteil'') of Berlin in the homonymous Boroughs of Berlin, borough (''Bezirk'') of Spandau. The historic city is situated, for the most part, on the western banks of the Havel river. As of 2020 the estimated population of Spandau was 39,653. Ruhleben (Berlin U-Bahn)
Ruhleben is a Berlin U-Bahn station, the western terminus of line U2. Named after the adjacent ''Ruhleben'' neighbourhood, it is located in the Westend district close to the border with Spandau. The station, with an elevated platform and subjacent entrance hall, was designed by Alfred Grenander, and inaugurated with the westernmost section of the present U2 on 22 December 1929. The tracks end immediately behind the platform without any reversing facility. Ruhleben Internment Camp
Ruhleben internment camp was a civilian detention camp in Germany during World War I. It was located in Ruhleben, a former '' Vorwerk'' manor to the west of Berlin, now split between the districts of Spandau and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. The camp was originally a harness racing track laid out north of the Berlin-Hamburg Railway line in 1908. Detainees The camp detainees included male citizens of the Allied Powers living, studying, working or on holiday in Germany at the outbreak of World War I. They also included the crews of several civilian ships stranded in German harbours or captured at sea. As well, there were a number of fishermen captured from trawlers which had been sunk in the North Sea in the first days of the war: they were mainly men from Hull, Grimsby and Boston. Numbers in the camp varied between 4,000 and 5,500 prisoners, most of them British. Life in the camp was described in several books and essays subsequently written by detainees.
