"Routine Check" is the debut single by British hip hop duo the Mitchell Brothers, featuring Kano and the Streets. It was their highest-charting single, peaking at No. 42 on the UK Singles Chart in March 2005. Theme The song is a defiant response to the perceived racism of the UK Police's "stop and search" policy. In 2012, Tony Mitchell said that the song summed him up as an artist and that the song was about a real situation in that many youngsters had to deal with such police interactions. He said that he wanted people "to like it, for them to like the funny side of it, but understand the seriousness of it as well. At that time with a lot of artists it was cool to be macho, but bringing that wit and humour for me was important." Critical reception Critical reception was mixed. The Mitchell Brothers
The Mitchell Brothers were a Ghanaian British rap duo from London, England. They consisted of cousins Owura "Tony" Nyanin from Manor Park and Kofi "Teddy" Hanson from Stockwell. They were the first signing to Mike Skinner's The Beats imprint and are sometimes known as the "geezers with skills". History Tony Nyanin and Teddy Hanson named themselves The Mitchell Brothers after siblings Phil and Grant Mitchell in the British soap '' EastEnders''. As teenagers, they pressed up 1,000 remix CDs called ''Sorted''. Teddy Hanson spotted Mike Skinner from the Streets in their local Barclay's bank in Brixton, South London, soon after Skinner had released his debut album, ''Original Pirate Material''. Hanson slipped a copy of his and Nyanin's demo CD into Skinner's bag, with his phone number on it. Skinner signed them to The Beats label and produced their first album. Kaine Brett Robinson (born 21 May 1985), better known as Kano, is a British rapper, songwriter and actor from East Ham, London. A significant contributor to grime music, he is widely considered one of the pioneers of grime music and culture, alongside artists such as Wiley and Dizzee Rascal.
