Ross Abbey
Ross Abbey (born 21 January 1953) is a former Australian rules footballer, who played with Footscray, now known as the Western Bulldogs, in the Victorian Football League (VFL). The son of Angus Abbey, a member of Footscray's 1954 premiership team, Abbey initially played for Wesley College, Melbourne and Strathmore, an area traditionally zoned to Essendon, but was recruited to Footscray under the father/son rule. Abbey played in a variety of positions, but mostly on the half back flank and as a ruck rover. His playing measurements were 180 cm and 82.5 kg, which coincidentally were the precise measurements of his father. Abbey's playing highlight was being part of the Footscray finals team of 1974 and 1976 (although Footscray lost the elimination final on both occasions after having finished 5th in each of those seasons). The 1974 VFL season was the 78th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 6 April until 28 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top five clubs. The premiership was won by the Richmond Football Club for the ninth time and second time consecutively, after it defeated by 41 points in the 1974 VFL Grand Final. Victoria Australian Rules Football Team
The Victoria Australian rules football team, known colloquially as the Big V, is the state representative side of Victoria, Australia, in the sport of Australian rules football. The Big V has a proud history, dominating the first 100 years of intercolonial-interstate football, and being the most successful state in State of Origin. After the change to State of Origin rules, the results with the other main Australian football states became more even. Victoria has a long and intense rivalry with South Australia and Western Australia. In the sport of Australian rules football, each of the eighteen players in a team is assigned to a particular named position on the field of play. These positions describe both the player's main role and by implication their location on the ground. As the game has evolved, tactics and team formations have changed, and the names of the positions and the duties involved have evolved too. There are 18 positions in Australian rules football, not including four (sometimes 6–8) interchange players who may replace another player on the ground at any time during play. The fluid nature of the modern game means the positions in football are not as formally defined as in sports such as rugby or American football. Even so, most players will play in a limited range of positions throughout their career, as each position requires a particular set of skills. Essendon Bombers
The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The club’s first recorded game took place on 7 June 1873 against a Carlton Second 20.
