Superette (band)
Superette were a New Zealand indie rock band, who were signed by Flying Nun Records. History The band was formed in 1993 in Auckland, New Zealand by members of the Jean-Paul Sartre Experience and Fang: Ben Howe, Dave Mulcahy, and Greta Anderson. The band's first release was the ''Rosepig'' EP, released in 1994. "Killer Clown" from the EP was released as a single in 1995. Flying Nun Records is a New Zealand independent record label formed in Christchurch in 1981 by music store manager Roger Shepherd. Described by ''The Guardian'' as "one of the world's great independent labels", Flying Nun is notable for bringing global attention to the Dunedin sound, a cultural and musical movement in early 1980s Dunedin, which gave rise to modern indie rock. History The label formed in the wake of a flurry of new post-punk-inspired labels appearing in New Zealand in the early 1980s, in particular Propeller Records in Auckland. Shepherd had intended to record the original local music of Christchurch, but soon the label rose to national prominence by championing the emerging music of Dunedin. A superette is an alternative name for a compact supermarket or "mini-mart". Etymology In French, the ''ette'' ending conveys the idea of a smaller version of a supermarket ('). However, supermarket has been shortened to ''super'' - leaving ''superette'' as an unusual example of a prefix and suffix with no stem word. Usage The word is used in some places, particularly in New Hampshire, Hawaii, New York City, Boston, Minnesota, rural North Carolina, and the North Island of New Zealand, and is a regular expression in the French language. In France, convenience stores are usually called supérettes when those are the sole convenience stores of a small town, to portray how their supplied inventory is similar to supermarkets' but their stocking capacity is reduced to the demand of the town.
