Roman Catholic Diocese Of Rockhampton
The Diocese of Rockhampton is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in Australia. It is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Brisbane. Erected in 1882, it covers Central Queensland. History The Diocese of Rockhampton was excised from the Archdiocese of Brisbane on 29 December 1882. Prior to this, the Brisbane archdiocese had responsibility for the entire state of Queensland, but the creation of the Rockhampton diocese split the state with responsibilities for the southern part of Queensland to remain with the Brisbane archdiocese while the northern part of Queensland became the responsibility of the new Rockhampton diocese. The Diocese of Townsville was excised from the Diocese of Rockhampton in 1930, reducing Rockampton's coverage to Central Queensland, while Townsville took responsibility for the areas further to the north. Central Queensland is an imprecisely-defined geographical division of Queensland ( a state in Australia) that centres on the eastern coast, around the Tropic of Capricorn. Its major regional centre is Rockhampton. The region extends from the Capricorn Coast west to the Central Highlands at Emerald, north to the Mackay Regional Council southern boundary, and south to Gladstone. Joseph Higgins (1838 – 16 September 1915) was an Irish-born Catholic bishop in Australia. He was the Bishop of Rockhampton in Queensland and the Bishop of Ballarat in Victoria. Sir Guilford Clyde Young KBE (10 November 1916 – 16 March 1988) was an Australian Roman Catholic clergyman. Born at Sandgate, Queensland, he was ordained priest in Rome on 3 June 1939, after a brilliant academic career at '' Propaganda Fide College''. Bernard Joseph Wallace
Bernard Joseph Wallace (21 June 1919 − 8 November 1990) was an Australian Roman Catholic bishop. Ordained to the priesthood on 26 July 1942, Wallace was commonly known as 'Bernie' and spent some 30 years as a teacher at Banyo Seminary in Brisbane, Queensland. During his time as a seminary teacher, Wallace was often critical of the church hierarchy. Wallace was named bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton, Australia in 1974 and resigned in 1990, shortly before his death. Francis Roberts Rush
Francis Roberts Rush (1916–2001) was a Roman Catholic priest in Queensland, Australia. He was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane. Early life Francis Roberts Rush was born in Townsville on 11 September 1916, the son of Thomas Rush and his wife Mary (née Roberts). Religious life Francis Rush was ordained a priest in Rome on 18 March 1939. From 1939 to 1945, he served as a priest at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Townsville. He was appointed Bishop of Rockhampton on 7 November 1960, where he implemented many of the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. He was appointed Roman Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane on 5 March 1973, replacing the retiring Patrick Mary O'Donnell. Andrew Gerard Tynan (1907–1960) was a Catholic prelate and the Bishop of Rockhampton in Queensland, Australia, from 31 March 1946 until his death on 3 June 1960. ''The Morning Bulletin'' is an online newspaper servicing the city of Rockhampton and the surrounding areas of Central Queensland, Australia. From 1861 to 2020, ''The Morning Bulletin'' was published as a print edition, before then becoming an exclusively online newspaper. The final print edition was published on 27 June 2020. History The first issue of ''The Bulletin'' was launched on 9 July 1861. It is the second oldest business in Rockhampton, the oldest being the Criterion Hotel which was established in October 1860. Joseph Shiel (17 February 1873 – 7 April 1931) was a Roman Catholic priest in Australia. He was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Rockhampton from 26 January 1913 until his death on 7 April 1931. Early life Joseph Shiel was born on 17 February 1873 at Swainstown, Killmessan, County Meath, Ireland, the son of Richard Shiel and his wife Ann (née Smyth).
