Robert Pollard (American Football)
Robert Pollard (born June 28, 1981) is a former American football defensive end. Pollard attended Texas Christian University on a football scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 2003. Afterward, he signed with the San Diego Chargers as a free agent (2004), then the Seattle Seahawks (2005–2006) of the National Football League before injuring his knee, ending his NFL career. Robert Lee Pollard (December 30, 1948) is an American football former defensive lineman who played eleven seasons in the National Football League (NFL) for the New Orleans Saints and the St. Louis Cardinals. Pollard attended the black Hebert High School in Beaumont and began his college football career in 1966 at Texas Southern University in Houston, as he wanted to stay close to his family. Texas Southern University is considered an Historically Black College and University. After a year and a half, he decided to transfer to Weber State University even though he had been a starter at Texas Southern because he felt that the school was trying to take his scholarship away in order to offer it to talented out of state players. Bob was named Saints defensive captain from 1976 to 1977 and was inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame in 1995. Defensive end (DE) is a defensive position in the sport of gridiron football. This position has designated the players at each end of the defensive line, but changes in formations over the years have substantially changed how the position is played. History Early formations, with six- and seven-man lines, used the end as a containment player, whose job was first to prevent an " end run" around his position, then secondarily to force plays inside. When most teams adopted a five-man line, two different styles of end play developed: "crashing" ends, who rushed into the backfield to disrupt plays, and "stand-up" or "waiting" ends, who played the more traditional containment style.
