Robert Aerens (1883, Ghent – 1969) was a Belgian painter of landscapes, portraits, and an etcher. Biography Robert Aerens was born in 1883 in Ghent. After taking Jean Delvin's lessons at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, he moved to Laethem with Frits van den Berghe. He married the writer Éliza Verwest in 1910. He made many trips to France, Italy and Switzerland, before he became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. Etching
Etching is traditionally the process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (incised) in the metal. In modern manufacturing, other chemicals may be used on other types of material. As a method of printmaking, it is, along with engraving, the most important technique for old master prints, and remains in wide use today. In a number of modern variants such as microfabrication etching and photochemical milling, it is a crucial technique in modern technology, including circuit boards. In traditional pure etching, a metal plate (usually of copper, zinc or steel) is covered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid. The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent (, KASK) is an art school that is one of the oldest art schools in Belgium. It is a part of the Hogeschool Gent, a Belgium University college. History The Academy was founded in 1748 as a school for drawing by the painter, Philippe Karel Marissal, at his home. During his studies in Paris, Marissal had become impressed by the , and was inspired to create a similar establishment in his home city. The Academy was granted a royal charter in 1771 by empress Maria Theresa of Austria. In 1995, the Academy was one of the sixteen educational institutions that were merged into the Hogeschool Gent. Jean Delvin
Jean-Joseph Delvin (1853 – 1922) was a Belgian painter who specialized in scenes with animals (primarily horses). Life Delvin was born in Ghent. He attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, where he studied under , and worked in the studios of Jean Portaels in Brussels. His fellow students there included André Cluysenaar and Jacques de Lalaing. Later, he undertook study trips to France and Spain. For many years, he shared a small workshop in a garden shed with Gustave Den Duyts. In 1883, he was invited to join the secessionist group ''Les XX'', along with James Ensor, Fernand Khnopff, Théo van Rysselberghe and several others, but he resigned only a few years later in 1886. He was also a member of ''La Libre Esthétique'' and ''Kunst van Heden'' (Art for Today) in Antwerp.
