Rob Mitchell (rower)
Rob Mitchell (born 8 May 1976) is an Australian former lightweight rower. He was a 1997 world champion and twice an Australian national champion. He won gold at the 1997 World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette in the lightweight men's eight. Club and state rowing Mitchell's senior club rowing was from the UTS Haberfield Rowing Club in Sydney. Mitchell rowed in New South Wales representative men's lightweight fours contesting the Penrith Cup at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships from 1997 to 2000. Those crews were victorious in 1997 and 1998 . International representative rowing Mitchell first represented Australia aged 19 in the lightweight double scull at the 1995 World Rowing U23 Championships at Groningen in The Netherlands where the Australians took the bronze medal. UTS Haberfield Rowing Club
UTS Haberfield Rowing Club in Sydney was formed as Haberfield Rowing Club in 1925. It has occupied its current site on Port Jackson's, Iron Cove at Dobroyd Point since 1926. The club had a senior and lightweight Sydney premiership & national competition focus until 1992 when it became aligned with the University of Technology, Sydney and since then it has also been a varsity club. Its elite program has enjoyed great success since the 1990s with a number of the club's oarsmen and women making Australian Olympic selection since then. History The Haberfield Rowing Club campus was formed by charter in 1925 but had some initial difficulties in getting council approval for its clubhouse site. Lyall McCarthy
Lyall McCarthy OAM (born 19 May 1956) is a former Australian national champion lightweight rower and national rowing coach. He has coached Australian crews to gold medals at the World Rowing Championships and the Olympic Games. Club and state rowing McCarthy competed as a lightweight oarsman and rowed for a number of clubs in Sydney and in Melbourne over a fifteen year first class rowing career from 1977 to 1992. He contested national championships titles at the Australian Rowing Championships in Drummoyne Rowing Club lightweight crews in 1977 & 1978. In 1980 he competed for the national lightweight pair title racing for the Mercantile Rowing Club. In 1981 he moved to the Melbourne University Boat Club, the home of the world champions Simon Gillett and Charles Bartlett. Coxless Four
A coxless four is a rowing boat used in the sport of competitive rowing. It is designed for four persons who propel the boat with sweep oars, without a coxswain. The crew consists of four rowers, each having one oar. There are two rowers on the stroke side (rower's right hand side) and two on the bow side (rower's lefthand side). There is no coxswain, but the rudder is controlled by one of the crew, normally with the rudder cable attached to the toe of one of their shoes which can pivot about the ball of the foot, moving the cable left or right. The steersman may row at bow, who has the best vision when looking over their shoulder, or on straighter courses stroke may steer, since they can point the stern of the boat at some landmark at the start of the course. Simon Burgess
Simon Burgess (born 11 September 1967 in Franklin, Tasmania) is an Australian national champion, two-time World Champion, three-time Olympian and dual Olympic silver medal-winning lightweight rower. He represented Australia ten times at World Rowing Championships between 1990 and 2002. He won world and national championships in both sculls and in sweep-oared boat classes during an eighteen-year elite level career. He won a gold medal at the 1997 World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette in the lightweight men's eight. The Hazewinkel is a 2,000 m rowing and regatta course belonging to Bloso in Heindonk, municipality of Willebroek, near Mechelen, Belgium.
