Rikugi-en Gardens
is a metropolitan park in Bunkyō, Tokyo, Bunkyō-ku, Tokyo, Japan. The name ''Rikugi-en'' means "garden of six principles", referring to the six elements in ''Waka (poetry), waka'' poetry, based on the traditional division of Chinese poetry into six categories. The gardens consist of a small pond, trees, and a hill. History The construction of the gardens took place between 1695 and 1702, and was headed by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu by permission of the fifth Tokugawa shogunate, Tokugawa shōgun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. It is a typical example of a daimyo garden from the Edo period. After the death of Yanagisawa, it was neglected. The founder of Mitsubishi, Iwasaki Yatarō, bought the gardens in 1878 and began to restore it. This was continued by his younger brother and successor, Iwasaki Yanosuke. Iwasaki Yatarō
was a Japanese industrialist and financier known as the founder of Mitsubishi, one of Japan's largest conglomerates. Early life Yatarō Iwasaki was born on 9 January 1835 in Aki, Tosa Province (now Kōchi Prefecture) into a provincial farming family. Iwasaki's family had been members of the ''samurai'' warrior nobility, but his great great grandfather, Iwasaki Yajiemon () had sold off his family's ''samurai'' status in obligation of debts during the Great Tenmei famine. His family derived from Iwasaki clan that was a branch of Takeda clan of Kai Province (). The ancestor of Iwasaki clan was Iwasaki Nobutaka () known as Takeda Shichirō () who was the fifth son of Takeda Nobumitsu. Bunkyō
is a Special wards of Tokyo, special ward in the Tokyo, Tokyo Metropolis in Japan. Situated in the middle of the ward area, Bunkyō is a residential and educational center. Beginning in the Meiji period, literati like Natsume Sōseki, as well as scholars and politicians have lived there.
