Richardson Block
The Richardson Block is a historic block of commercial buildings at 113-151 Pearl and 109-119 High Streets in Boston, Massachusetts. It consists of a series of buildings constructed in the aftermath of the Great Boston Fire of 1872. The first of these buildings, at the corner of Pearl and High Streets, was designed by William Preston and built in 1873 for Jeffrey Richardson, using granite and brick salvaged from buildings that had previously stood on the site. The area was an important locus of the leather goods business both before and after the fire, and the buildings constructed after the fire are among the only neo-Greek commercial structures standing in Boston's Financial District. The properties were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Gridley Street Historic District
The Gridley Street Historic District is a one-square-block commercial historic district on the edge of the Financial District of Boston, Massachusetts. It is bounded by High, Pearl, Purchase and Congress Streets, and was developed in the aftermath of the Great Boston Fire of 1872. The district includes the previously-listed Richardson Block, as well as the Henry Willis Building (169-177 Purchase Street), both built immediately after the fire, as well as the Western Union Building (a 1930 Art Deco high-rise), and the Bradley and Woodruff Block, a Romanesque Revival structure. The moderate scale of these buildings (which are dwarfed by the modern skyscrapers of adjacent blocks) typifies the post-fire development period. Great Boston Fire Of 1872
The Great Boston Fire of 1872 was Boston's largest fire, and still ranks as one of the most costly fire-related property losses in American history. The conflagration began at 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 1872, in the basement of a commercial warehouse at 83–87 Summer Street. The fire was finally contained 12 hours later, after it had consumed about of Boston's downtown, 776 buildings and much of the financial district, and caused $73.5 million in damage (equivalent to $ billion in ). The destruction to the buildings was valued at $13.5 million and the personal property loss was valued at $60 million. In the end, at least 30 people died, including 12 firefighters. A Boston Landmark is a designation by the Boston Landmarks Commission for historic buildings and sites throughout the city of Boston based on the grounds that it has historical, social, cultural, architectural or aesthetic significance to New England or the United States. While National Landmark or National Register status can provide tax incentives for the owner of an income-producing property, local landmark status provides more control over modifications to a designated historic structure or place. The Boston Landmarks Commission (BLC) is the historic preservation agency for the City of Boston. The commission was created by state legislation i1975 History Urban renewal in the United States started with the Housing Act of 1949, part of President Harry Truman's Fair Deal.
