Rich Verster
This is a list of rugby union footballers who have played for the Lions in Super Rugby, the Pro14 and United Rugby Championship competitions, and the EPCR Challenge Cup. The list includes any player that has played in a regular season match, semi-final or final for the Lions, ordered by debut date and name. The Lions competed in Super Rugby in 1996 as Transvaal, in 1997 as the Gauteng Lions, as the Cats between 1999 and 2006 and as the Lions between 2007 and 2012 and from 2014 to 2020, competed in the Pro14 Rainbow Cup in 2021, the United Rugby Championship from 2021 and in the EPCR Challenge Cup since 2022. Lions (United Rugby Championship)
The Lions (known as the Emirates Lions for sponsorship reasons) is a South African professional rugby union team based in Johannesburg in the Gauteng province. They competed in the Super Rugby competition until 2020, and have competed in the United Rugby Championship since 2021. They are the successor of the teams known as Transvaal ( 1996), Gauteng Lions ( 1997) and the Cats ( 1998– 2006). They had varied results in Super Rugby, finishing at the bottom of the table six times (in 1998, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2010 and 2012), but reaching the semifinal stage five times (in 2000, 2001, 2016, 2017 and 2018). They reached their first final in 2016 – where they lost to the 20–3 in Wellington – The Lions made the final again in 2017 but this time on their own ground but unfortunately lost again against the Crusaders with the final score being 17-25. Schalk Willem 'Hond' van der Merwe is a former South African rugby union player who last played for the in the Currie Cup. He previously played for the , the and the in domestic South African rugby, for the and the in Super Rugby, for in the French Top 14 and for Irish Pro14 side Ulster. His usual position is prop. Coenraad bleskop George van Wyk (born 8 January 1988) is a South African rugby union footballer. He plays either as a fly-half or full-back. Currently, he represents Toshiba Brave Lupus in the Japanese Top League. He has previously played Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup rugby for , , the , the and the , Super Rugby for the and the and Varsity Cup rugby for . In 2013, he was included in the South Africa President's XV team that played in the 2013 IRB Tbilisi Cup. The team won the tournament when it went undefeated after all three matches. Luvuyiso 'MB' Lusaseni (born 16 December 1988) is a former South African rugby union player for the in the Rugby Challenge. He played first class rugby between 2009 and 2016, making in excess of 100 appearances. His regular position is lock or flanker and he played for the in Super Rugby and for the , , and domestically. He also played representative rugby for South Africa Schools in 2006, South Africa Under-20 in 2008, the South African Barbarians in 2012 and the South African Universities team in 2013. He retired from rugby union at the end of 2016 to concentrate on the production of his own craft beer.
