Rhizobium Rhizogenes
''Rhizobium rhizogenes'' (formerly ''Agrobacterium rhizogenes'') is a Gram-negative soil bacterium that produces hairy root disease in Dicotyledon, dicotyledonous plants. ''R. rhizogenes'' induces the formation of proliferative multiple-branched adventitious roots at the site of infection, so-called 'hairy roots'. It also induces galls. In the rhizosphere, plants may suffer from wounds by soil pathogens or other sources. This leads to the secretion of natural phenol, phenolic compounds like acetosyringone which have chemotaxis, chemotactic effects that attract the bacteria. Under such conditions, certain bacterial genes are turned on leading to the transfer of its Transfer DNA, T-DNA from its root-inducing plasmid (Ri plasmid) into the plant through the wound. Albert Joyce Riker
Dr. Albert Joyce Riker (April 3, 1894 – February 21, 1982) was a noted American plant pathologist and professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Riker was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, the son of Albert Birdsall and Mary Edith (Davis) Riker. He graduated from high school in Moundsville, West Virginia, after which he worked for the Royal Three Barrel Gun Company, was an automobile repairman and salesman, and helped build greenhouses. He then attended Oberlin College, receiving in 1917 his A.B. degree in botany. He began graduate work in botany at the University of Cincinnati, but interrupted it during 1918-1919 to serve as a bacteriologist in Army hospital in France in World War I. After war's end, he completed his MA in 1920 in botany and bacteriology, and in 1922 his PhD in plant pathology from the University of Wisconsin where he studied crown gall, after which he joined the department. Agrobacterium Radiobacter
''Agrobacterium radiobacter'' is the type species of the genus ''Agrobacterium'', a genus of Gram-negative bacteria that cause tumors in plants. It was incorrectly synonymized with ''Agrobacterium tumefaciens'' until 2022. This species is widely found in soil, in plant rhizospheres, and in human clinical specimens. Some members such as B6 harbor a tumor-inducing (Ti) plasmid and cause crown gall disease in plants. The type strain ATCC 19358 does not carry such a plasmid and is nonpathogenic. The incorrect synonimization with ''A. tumefaciens'' was due to a strain B6 (ATCC 23308) being assigned as the type strain of ''A. tumefaciens'' in 1980, when B6 should be classified as ''A. radiobacter''. One consequence is that this B6 strain is very well-studied in the lab.
