Renfro Valley Barn Dance
''Renfro Valley Barn Dance'' was an American country music stage and radio show originally carried by WLW-AM in Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday nights. It debuted on October 9, 1937, from the Cincinnati Music Hall and moved to the Memorial Auditorium in Dayton, Ohio. It was hosted by John Lair, Red Foley, Cotton Foley, and Whitey Ford. The show later moved to larger quarters near Mt. Vernon, Kentucky in November 1939 and was carried by WHAS-AM in Louisville, the NBC Radio Network and WCKY-AM in Cincinnati. The program is no longer broadcast, but a live show bearing its name takes place on Saturday nights at the Renfro Valley Entertainment Center in Renfro Valley, Kentucky. A sister program, the ''Renfro Valley Gatherin''' (established in 1943), continues to air. PBS produced a documentary series on American Roots Music called "In the Valley Where Time Stands Still", which is a film about the history of the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. Coon Creek Girls
The Coon Creek Girls were one of the first all-female string bands. The band was created in the mid-1930s by John Lair for his Renfro Valley Barn Dance show. The group toured throughout the greater region of Cincinnati, and performed at the White House for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, his wife, Eleanor and the King and Queen of England, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The band officially disbanded in 1957. The Coon Creek Girls have been an inspiration to many musicians, and the New Coon Creek Girls carried their name and continued the legacy of “fast-picking,” all female bands. The Girls of the Golden West was an American female country music duo, that was popular during the "Western Era" of the 1930s and 1940s. The duo comprised two sisters, Mildred Fern Good (April 11, 1913 – May 2, 1993) and Dorothy Laverne Good (December 11, 1915 – November 12, 1967). They were born in Mount Carmel, Illinois, United States. Rise to fame The Girls of the Golden West first entertained family and friends before they worked on a radio station in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1933, they moved to radio station WLS (AM), where they featured on program National Barn Dance, then the home of country music pioneers Gene Autry and Patsy Montana.
