Refugee (Various Artists)
''Refugee'' is a charity album curated by Scottish singer-songwriter Robin Adams. The album includes original song contributions from Bonnie Prince Billy, Linda Thompson, Ricky Ross, Alasdair Roberts, Richard Dawson, BMX Bandits, Kathryn Joseph, Robin Adams, and others. The album was recorded to raise funds for the refugee crisis in its many forms, from Syria and beyond. All proceeds raised by the album continue to go to MOAS ( Migrant Offshore Aid Station). Reception As well as raising funds for MOAS Moa are extinct giant flightless birds native to New Zealand. The term has also come to be used for chicken in many Polynesian cultures and is found in the names of many chicken recipes, such as Kale moa and Moa Samoa. Robin Adams (singer-songwriter)
Robin Adams is an English lyric baritone, a classical singer who has appeared in several major opera houses and concert halls. Life and career Adams studied singing with Patricia MacMahon and Peter Alexander Wilson as well as piano and cello at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama in Glasgow and later on with Carol Blaickner-Mayo in Vienna. He won several awards and scholarships and started his career in 1996 singing the Ferryman in '' Curlew River'' by Benjamin Britten at the Edinburgh International Festival and at a Japan tour. Two other Britten roles – ''Billy Budd'' and Tarquinius in '' The Rape of Lucretia'' – paved his way to Glasgow and Vienna. Bonnie Prince Billy
Joseph Will Oldham (born January 15, 1970) is an American singer-songwriter and actor. From 1993 to 1997, he performed and recorded in collaboration with dozens of other musicians under variations of Palace (Palace, Palace Flophouse, Palace Brothers, Palace Songs, and Palace Music). After briefly publishing music under his own name, in 1998 he adopted Bonnie "Prince" Billy as the name for most of his work. Early life and education Oldham was born on January 15, 1970, in Louisville, Kentucky. His mother, Joanne Lei Will Tafel Oldham, was a teacher and artist. His father, Joseph Collins Oldham, was an attorney and photographer. Oldham graduated from the J. Graham Brown School in 1988. Linda Thompson (''née'' Pettifer, born 23 August 1947) is an English singer-songwriter. Thompson is one of the most recognised names and voices in the British folk rock movement of the 1970s and 1980s, in collaboration with fellow British folk rock musician, guitarist Richard Thompson, to whom she was married for ten years, and later as a solo artist. Richard Alexander Ross (born 22 December 1957) is a Scottish singer-songwriter and broadcaster who is the lead singer of the rock band Deacon Blue. Alongside his discography with Deacon Blue, Ross has released a number of solo albums, his first, '' So Long Ago'' was released in 1984. Alasdair Roberts (musician)
Alasdair Roberts (born 8 August 1977) is a Scottish folk musician. He released a number of albums under the name Appendix Out and, following the 2001 album ''The Night Is Advancing'', under his own name. Roberts is also known for his frequent collaborations with other musicians and writers, as well as for being a member of the folk supergroup The Furrow Collective. Early life Roberts was born in Swabia, Germany, the son of former folk guitarist (and partner of Dougie MacLean) Alan Roberts (1946–2001) and his German wife Annegret. He has two sisters. He was raised in Kilmahog, a hamlet close to the small town of Callander, near Stirling in central Scotland, where he started playing the guitar and writing music. He has long been based in Glasgow. Richard Dawson (musician)
Richard Michael Dawson (born 1981) is an English folk-influenced musician from Newcastle upon Tyne. His 2014 album ''Nothing Important'' was released by Weird World and was met with critical acclaim. His 2017 album ''Peasant'' received similar acclaim, and was chosen by ''The Quietus'' as their album of the year. In 2019, he released the album ''2020'', again to critical acclaim. Released on Weird World (an imprint of Domino Records) in late November 2021, ''Henki'', a collaborative album made with the Finnish band Circle, was announced in September 2021. Career Dawson grew up in Newcastle and became interested in singing as a child, attempting to emulate American singers such as Faith No More's Mike Patton. BMX Bandits (band)
BMX Bandits are a Scottish guitar pop band formed in Bellshill in 1986. Led by songwriter and lead vocalist Duglas T. Stewart, their music is heavily influenced by 1960s pop. They have shared members with numerous other local bands, including Teenage Fanclub and the Soup Dragons. BMX Bandits were a favourite band of Kurt Cobain, who said "If I could be in any other band, it would be BMX Bandits". In 2011, they were the subject of the documentary ''Serious Drugs: A Film About BMX Bandits''. History BMX Bandits were formed in Bellshill by songwriter and lead vocalist Duglas T. Kathryn Joseph
Kathryn Joseph (born Kathryn Emma Sawers) is a Scottish singer-songwriter and musician. Her debut album ''Bones You Have Thrown Me and Blood I've Spilled'' won the 2015 Scottish Album of the Year Award. In 2016, Joseph appeared on RM Hubbert's collaborative album ''Telling the Trees'', providing vocals for the track "The Dog". The Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) is an international humanitarian non-governmental organization based in Malta that provides aid and emergency medical relief to refugees and migrants. Most activities between 2014 and 2017 have focused on sea-rescue of refugees and migrants, some 2017 activities have centered around healthcare to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. History Cofounder Chris Catrambone on Phoenix MOAS was founded in 2013 by Italian businesswoman Regina Catrambone and her American husband Chris Catrambone, after Regina found the lifejacket of a refugee who had drowned on the journey from North Africa to Europe.
