Reformists and Democrats (''Riformisti e Democratici'', ReD) was a predominantly social-democratic faction within the Democratic Party (PD), a political party in Italy. Its most notable member was Massimo D'Alema. Background It was founded in June 2004 as an association of more than 100 MPs close to the ''Fondazione ItalianiEuropei'', a think tank led by D'Alema, and was mainly composed of long-time '' Dalemiani'', such as Pier Luigi Bersani, Nicola Latorre, Marco Minniti, Barbara Pollastrini and Michele Ventura. Walter Veltroni
Walter Veltroni (; born 3 July 1955) is an Italian writer, film director, journalist, and politician, who served as the first leader of the Democratic Party within the centre-left opposition, until his resignation on 17 February 2009. He served as Mayor of Rome from June 2001 to February 2008. Early life Veltroni was born in Rome. His father, Vittorio Veltroni, an eminent RAI manager in the 1950s, died only one year later. His mother, Ivanka Kotnik, was the daughter of Ciril Kotnik, a Slovenian diplomat at the Holy See who helped numerous Jews and anti-fascists to escape Nazi persecution after 1943. Popular Italy ( it, Italia Popolare, IP), whose complete name is Popular Italy – Movement for Europe (''Italia Popolare – Movimento per l'Europa'', IP–MpE), is a Christian-democratic faction within the Democratic Party. The Populars (''I Popolari'') is a loose association within the Democratic Party (PD), a political party in Italy. The Populars are the heirs of the Italian People's Party (PPI), a Christian-democratic party of the Christian left, and of the left-wing of the Christian Democracy (DC). Paolo De Castro (born 2 February 1958) is an Italian politician, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies in the D'Alema I, D'Alema II and Prodi II cabinets.
