Rancho Laguna (Alemany)
Rancho Laguna part of the grazing lands granted to Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa in 1844, surrounding Laguna Lake at the head of the Los Osos Valley in the city of San Luis Obispo and San Luis Obispo County, California. With Rancho Cañada de los Pinos Rancho Laguna was one of the two ranchos returned to the Catholic Church. It was returned in 1859, after its confiscation in 1845. History Rancho Laguna was part of the grazing lands granted to the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, founded in 1772 by Father Junípero Serra in San Luis Obispo County, California. These lands were lost to the Catholic Church due to the Mexican secularization act of 1833. With the Secularization act of 1833, the mission pasture and garden lands were sold or granted to Mexican citizens as ranchos over the next thirteen years. Bishop Peak (California)
Bishop Peak is a volcanic plug in San Luis Obispo, California. It is the tallest of the Morros or " Nine Sisters", a chain of similar peaks stretching to Morro Bay. Often said to take its name from its resemblance to a bishop's miter, it is named in homage to the town's name (San Luis Obispo). "Obispo" is the Spanish word for Bishop. Geology Like the other Morros, Bishop Peak is primarily composed of dacite. About 20 to 25 million years ago, magma welled up underneath a layer of softer rock and solidified. The softer overlying rock has since eroded away, leaving a distinct rugged shape. Wildlife Bishop Peak's thin, rocky soil supports many plants that are not common in the surrounding area. Ranchito De Santa Fe
Ranchito de Santa Fe was a Mexican land grant that in the present day lies in the US, partially within the southern bounds of the city of San Luis Obispo, with the balance east of U.S. Route 101 in San Luis Obispo County, California. History Ranchito de Santa Fe was granted on September 18, 1842, by Governor Juan Alvarado to Victor Linares. With the cession of California to the United States following the Mexican–American War, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided that the land grants would be honored. As required by the Land Act of 1851, Victor Linares made a claim for 1,000 varas square on February 12, 1852, and it was confirmed by the commission March 14, 1853, by the district court January 14, 1857. An appeal was dismissed June 3, 1859. The grant was patented to Michaela Linares et al. on August 9, 1866. Cerro San Luis Obispo
Cerro San Luis Obispo ( Obispeño: ''łpɨłhɨtšnuka'' ) is a mountain in San Luis Obispo, California. It is part of the chain of peaks called the Nine Sisters. It is a common spot for hiking, jogging and mountain biking, and has steep terrain. Below the west side of the visible peak, there is a large plateau with a large wooden stage on the east end. The large white "M" present on the east face derives from Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School. History Some time around 1900, an American Civil War veteran, G. W. Chandler, lived on the mountain and planted lemons and oranges. The trees still overlook the city and are watered by two springs. The Lemon Grove Trail at the base of the mountain takes its name from these groves. Irish Hills
Irish Hills is an area of land located roughly in southeastern Jackson County and northwest Lenawee County in Southeast Michigan. It was named after the numerous Irish immigrants who settled there from 1830 until 1850. Today it is known throughout the state for its scenery, especially in the summer. Its hills and larger kettle lakes surround the Hayes State Park. It is also known for its chain of smaller kettle lakes bordered by US Highway 12 (US 12, Michigan Avenue). These link to Cambridge Junction Historic State Park, which is adjoined by the Michigan International Speedway. Public Land Commission
The California Land Act of 1851 (), enacted following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the admission of California as a state in 1850, established the California State Lands Commission to determine the validity of prior Spanish and Mexican land grants. It required landowners who claimed title under the Mexican government to file their claim with a commission within two years. Contrary to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which guaranteed full protection of all property rights for Mexican citizens, it placed the burden on landholders to prove their title. While the commission eventually confirmed 604 of the 813 claims, almost all of the claims went to court and resulted in protracted litigation.
