Ralph Staub
Ralph Staub (July 21, 1899 in Chicago, Illinois – October 22, 1969, Los Angeles, California) was a movie director, writer, and producer. He broke into the motion picture industry in 1920, filming short travelogues in Alaska. Relocating to Hollywood, he sold his services to various short-subject companies. He undertook all the filmmaking duties himself: producer, director, writer, photographer, film editor, special effects man, electrician, and prop man. In 1933 he joined the Warner Bros. shorts department, where he directed slapstick comedies (his most famous being 1935's ''Keystone Hotel (film), Keystone Hotel'') and musicals (many filmed in Technicolor). He left Warners in 1936 and joined Republic Pictures as a feature-film director; this engagement lasted through 1938. He had short stints at Universal Pictures and Monogram Pictures in 1939-40. Frank Fontaine (April 19, 1920 – August 4, 1978) was an American stage, radio, film and television comedian, singer, and actor. Early years and personal life Born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Fontaine came from a family of entertainers. His father, Ray Fontaine, of French-Canadian descent, was a popular vocalist whose career in Canada resulted in his being compared to Bing Crosby. His mother, Anna McCarthy, of Irish and Scottish descent, performed as a dancer, and he had a brother who also became a singer. ''Art Trouble'' is a 1934 American pre-Code comedy short directed by Ralph Staub and starring Harry Gribbon and Shemp Howard. The film is notable for featuring an uncredited James Stewart in his first screen role. Gribbon was one of several comedy team partners with whom Shemp Howard worked. Howard had been an original member of the Three Stooges and brother of Stooges Curly Howard and Moe Howard. Harry Cohn (July 23, 1891 – February 27, 1958) was a co-founder, president, and production director of Columbia Pictures, Columbia Pictures Corporation. Life and career Cohn was born to a working-class Jewish family in New York City. His father, Joseph Cohn, was a tailor from Germany, and his mother, Bella Joseph, was from the Pale of Settlement, Russian Empire.
