Radio Belize
The Broadcasting Corporation of Belize, otherwise known as Radio Belize (using the call-sign of VPM; no relation to the current VPM-FM), was a radio station in Belize that shut down in November 1998. Until the 1980s it was Belize's only radio station. Beginnings The BCB began as the British Honduras Broadcasting Service, modeled on the home country's British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). ''Amandala'' columnist Selvin "Smokey Joe" Wade remembers the station by its original callsign, ZIK 2, with which it signed on in the 1930s. At this stage it played mainly music from abroad. With the rise of the nationalist movement efforts were made to bring the BHBS closer to Belizean identity and it assumed the name Radio Belize. VPM-FM
KREM Radio (call-sign VPM-FM) is a Belize City radio station operating on the F.M. band at 96.5, 91.1 and 101.1 MHz since November 17, 1989. Its headquarters are located at 3304 Partridge Street in Belize City, also the home of the ''Amandala'' newspaper and Krem Television. It brands itself the "first private radio station in Belize" (not counting the now defunct British Forces installation in Ladyville). History KREM Radio chairman and shareholder Evan X Hyde had briefly dabbled in radio broadcasting in the late 1970s at the country's only radio station at the time, Radio Belize. Shortwave
Shortwave radio is radio transmission using shortwave (SW) radio frequencies. There is no official definition of the band, but the range always includes all of the high frequency band (HF), which extends from 3 to 30 MHz (100 to 10 metres); above the medium frequency band (MF), to the bottom of the VHF band. Radio waves in the shortwave band can be reflected or refracted from a layer of electrically charged atoms in the atmosphere called the ionosphere. Therefore, short waves directed at an angle into the sky can be reflected back to Earth at great distances, beyond the horizon. This is called skywave or "skip" propagation. FM 2000
Positive Vibes FM (call-sign VPV-FM) is a private radio station in Belize and the radio arm of the Opposition People's United Party. History Positive Vibes FM originally started as FM 2000 in 1994, owned by Gerald Garbutt. Its primary signal was 90.5 FM and secondary signal 102.9 FM. FM 2000, advertised as the "21st century radio station", began operations on November 24, 1994, on Coney Drive in Belize City, upstairs of the Body 2000 gym. It focused mostly on the urban demographic with modern music including rap, hip hop and reggae, mixed with other contemporary music. Among its most popular DJs were media veterans Adrian Harris, Mike Nicholson, Ed Yorke and G. Michael Reid. Later popular DJs included Karil Wallace. All of the above had left FM 2000 by 2005. Hurricane Mitch
Hurricane Mitch is the second-deadliest Atlantic hurricane on record, causing over 11,000 fatalities in Central America in 1998, including approximately 7,000 in Honduras and 3,800 in Nicaragua due to cataclysmic flooding from the slow motion of the storm. It was the deadliest hurricane in Central American history, surpassing Hurricane Fifi–Orlene, which killed slightly fewer people there in 1974. Andy Palacio
Andy Vivian Palacio (December 2, 1960 – January 19, 2008) was a Belizean punta musician and government official. He was also a leading activist for the Garifuna people and their culture. Biography Palacio was born and raised in the coastal village of Barranco. He worked briefly as a high school social studies teacher before turning to music. Palacio received the award for "Best New Artist" at the Caribbean Music Awards in 1991, WOMEX Award in 2007 and was posthumously awarded the BBC3 Awards for World Music award in the Americas Category, in 2008. United Democratic Party (Belize)
The United Democratic Party (UDP) is one of the two major political parties in Belize. It is currently the main opposition party, having lost the 2020 Belizean general election, after previously holding the government across three prior terms. Founded as a centre-right conservative party, the UDP is led by Shyne Barrow. Founding In 1973 political opposition in Belize was weak and the ruling People's United Party (PUP) had never lost a legislative election since its foundation. The main opposition parties, the National Independence Party and the People's Development Movement met together with a new Liberal Party to consider forming an alliance to fight the PUP. The resulting merger formed the United Democratic Party on 27 September 1973.
