Radio Aire
Radio Aire was an Independent Local Radio station, serving Leeds and West Yorkshire. The station was merged and relaunched as Greatest Hits Radio West Yorkshire, as part of a rebrand, on 1 September 2020. History Radio Aire was launched at 6am on 1 September 1981 by breakfast presenter Graham Thornton – the first song played on air was ''Pilot of the Airwaves'' by Charlie Dore. The station's first news bulletin was read by Christa Ackroyd and in November 1982, she became the UK's first female radio news editor. The station originally broadcast on 362m Medium Wave (828 kHz AM) and 94.6 VHF. In 1986, Radio Aire's VHF/FM frequency changed to 96.3 FM. Radio Aire's studios were based on Burley Road, overlooking Kirkstall Road, next to Yorkshire Television's headquarters – it was the first Independent Local Radio station to have purpose-built studios. FM Broadcasting
FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting that uses frequency modulation (FM) of the radio broadcast carrier wave. Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to transmit high fidelity, high-fidelity sound over broadcast radio. Hits Radio is a network of 26 contemporary hit radio stations in the United Kingdom, owned and operated by Bauer Media Audio UK. The network launched in 2018 with the rebranding of Bauer's Manchester station Key 103 and its merger with The Hits, and since then various other local stations have been rebranded under the Hits Radio banner. As of December 2024, the network has a combined reach of 7.1 million weekly listeners according to RAJAR. Paddy Bunce is a sports radio reporter in the United Kingdom. He has worked at a number of radio stations across the U.K. Career He began his career working on Capital Gold Sport as a football reporter and presenter and has also worked at Invicta FM in Kent as a presenter and at Radio Aire in Yorkshire. Trevor Neil "Bruno" Brookes (born 1959 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire) is an English former radio presenter who became prominent on British radio in the 1980s. He was CEO of in-store radio company Immedia from 2000 to 2020. Early life and career Brookes attended Bradwell and Seabridge secondary schools in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Steve Priestley is a British disc jockey, who used to work for Magic (UK radio station), Magic 105.4 in London. Career He first came to prominence in the early 1990s as the voice over for an ITV Network, ITV programme on Saturdays called Movies, Games and Videos.
