RIP (band)
R.I.P. was a hardcore punk group from Mondragón, Basque Country (autonomous community), Basque Autonomous Community (Spain), and were part of the Basque Radical Rock musical movement in the early 1980s. By 2014, three of the band's classic four members — lead singer Karlos "Mahoma" Agirreurreta, bassist "Portu" Mancebo and guitarist Jul Bolinaga — had died. History 1981–1983: The beginning In 1981, the Bolinaga brothers Jul and Txerra formed a band called Doble Cero, along with bassist and singer Eduardo Mancebo, a.k.a. "Portu". Ribosome-inactivating Protein
A ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP) is a protein synthesis inhibitor that acts at the eukaryote, eukaryotic ribosome. This protein family describes a large family of such proteins that work by acting as rRNA N-glycosylase (EC 3.2.2.22). They inactivate 60S ribosomal subunits by an N-glycosidic cleavage, which releases a specific adenine base from the sugar-phosphate backbone of 28S rRNA. RIPs exist in bacteria and plants. Members of the family include shiga toxins, and type I (e.g. trichosanthin and luffin) and type II (e.g. ricin, agglutinin, and abrin) ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs). All these toxins are structurally related. RIP Medical Debt
Undue Medical Debt, formerly RIP Medical Debt, is a Long Island City–based 501(c)(3) charity focused on the elimination of personal medical debt. Founded in 2014 by former debt collection executives Jerry Ashton and Craig Antico, the charity purchases portfolios of income-qualifying medical debt from debt collectors and healthcare providers, and then relieves the debt. The charity converts every dollar contributed into an average of $100 of purchased medical debt relief. The founders were inspired by medical debt elimination efforts by Occupy Wall Street. As of May 2025, the charity claims to have relieved debts for over 9,850,000 people, totaling over $15 billion. Restricted Isometry Property
In linear algebra, the restricted isometry property (RIP) characterizes matrices which are nearly orthonormal, at least when operating on sparse vectors. The concept was introduced by Emmanuel Candès and Terence TaoE. J. Candes and T. Tao, "Decoding by Linear Programming," IEEE Trans. Inf. Th., 51(12): 4203–4215 (2005). and is used to prove many theorems in the field of compressed sensing. There are no known large matrices with bounded restricted isometry constants (computing these constants is strongly NP-hard, and is hard to approximate as well), but many random matrices have been shown to remain bounded. Reduced Ignition Propensity
Fire-safe cigarettes (FSC) are cigarettes that are designed to extinguish more quickly than standard cigarettes if ignored, with the intention of preventing accidental fires. They are also known as lower ignition propensity (LIP), reduced fire risk (RFR), self-extinguishing, fire-safe or reduced ignition propensity (RIP) cigarettes. In the United States, "FSC" above the barcode signifies that the cigarettes sold are fire standards compliant (FSC). Fire-safe cigarettes are produced by adding two to three thin bands of less-porous cigarette paper along the length of the cigarette, creating a series of harder-to-burn “speed bumps”. As the cigarette burns down, it will tend to be extinguished at each of these points unless the user is periodically intensifying the flame by inhaling. Ranger Indoctrination Program
Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP) is an 8-week course held at Fort Benning, Georgia, for the U.S. Army's 75th Ranger Regiment. In 2009, RASP replaced both the Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP) for enlisted Soldiers and Ranger Orientation Program (ROP) for Officers, both commissioned and noncommissioned. RASP is designed to prepare soldiers, many of whom have just graduated Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training and are still considered "fresh" recruits, for assignment to the 75th Ranger Regiment. Soldiers from other units attempting to transfer to the 75th Ranger Regiment also attend the course, but are less common than new soldiers. The Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is one of the oldest distance-vector routing protocols which employs the hop count as a routing metric. RIP prevents routing loops by implementing a limit on the number of hops allowed in a path from source to destination. The largest number of hops allowed for RIP is 15, which limits the size of networks that RIP can support. RIP implements the split horizon, route poisoning, and holddown mechanisms to prevent incorrect routing information from being propagated. A raster image processor (RIP) is a component used in a printing system which produces a raster image also known as a bitmap. Such a bitmap is used by a later stage of the printing system to produce the printed output. The input may be a page description in a high-level page description language such as PostScript, PDF, or XPS. Immunoprecipitation (IP) is the technique of precipitating a protein antigen out of solution using an antibody that specifically binds to that particular protein. This process can be used to isolate and concentrate a particular protein from a sample containing many thousands of different proteins.
