R. P. Keigwin
Richard Prescott Keigwin ( ; 8 April 1883 – 26 November 1972) was an English schoolmaster, sportsman, translator, and author. He played first-class cricket for University of Cambridge, Cambridge University, the Marylebone Cricket Club, Essex County Cricket Club, Essex, and Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Gloucestershire, and Field hockey, hockey for Essex and England men's national field hockey team, England. After teaching at the Royal Naval College, Osborne, he was a naval officer during the First World War, then a master at Clifton College, and was notable for his translations from the work of Hans Christian Andersen. Early life Keigwin was born in Lexden in Essex and educated at Clifton College, Bristol, in Watson's House. While there, he partnered A. E. J. HMS Indomitable (1907)
HMS ''Indomitable'' was one of three s built for the Royal Navy before World War I and had an active career during the war. She tried to hunt down the German ships and in the Mediterranean when war broke out and bombarded Turkish fortifications protecting the Dardanelles even before the British declared war on Turkey. She helped to sink the German armoured cruiser during the Battle of Dogger Bank in 1915 and towed the damaged British battlecruiser to safety after the battle. She damaged the German battlecruisers and during the Battle of Jutland in mid-1916 and watched her sister ship explode. Deemed obsolete after the war, she was sold for scrap in 1921. Battlecruiser
The battlecruiser (also written as battle cruiser or battle-cruiser) was a type of capital ship of the first half of the 20th century. These were similar in displacement, armament and cost to battleships, but differed in form and balance of attributes. Battlecruisers typically had thinner armour (to a varying degree) and a somewhat lighter main gun battery than contemporary battleships, installed on a longer hull with much higher engine power in order to attain greater speeds. The first battlecruisers were designed in the United Kingdom as a successor to the armoured cruiser, at the same time as that the dreadnought succeeded the pre-dreadnought battleship. Henry Keigwin
Henry David Keigwin (14 May 1881 – 20 September 1916) was an English cricketer. He was born in Lexden, in Colchester and died near Thiepval, France. He was educated at Clifton College, along with his brothers R. P. Keigwin and Herbert Keigwin Keigwin, whose brothers R. P. Keigwin and Herbert Keigwin also played first-class cricket, played for Essex and Scotland in his three years of first-class cricket between 1906 and 1909. He scored 77 and 27 for the Gentlemen of England against Surrey in April 1906, W.G. Grace's final first-class appearance. Herbert Keigwin
Herbert Stanley Keigwin ( 4 May 1878 – 11 March 1962) was an English cricketer and colonial administrator in South Africa. Keigwin was born in Capel, Colchester, Essex, the brother of Henry Keigwin and R. P. Keigwin. He was educated at St Paul's School, London, and Peterhouse, Cambridge. He played first-class matches for Cambridge University (1901); London County (1901); Rhodesia (1909/10). He also played for: CEM Wilson's XI (1898); Essex Second XI (1900–1901) and PR Johnson's XI (1901). He later joined the colonial civil service. He was Director of Native Development, Southern Rhodesia, when he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 1924 Birthday Honours "on the termination of the administrative functions of the British South Africa Company in Southern Rhodesia and in Northern Rhodesia." No further examination or study is required for this promotion, which is a mark of seniority rather than an additional postgraduate qualification. According to the formula of ''ad eundem gradum'', the graduates of the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin are eligible to apply to incorporate and be granted equivalent academic degrees at any of the other two universities, provided that they wish to register for such a degree or are members of the academic staff; they also pay a required fee. Tripos
TRIPOS (''TRIvial Portable Operating System'') is a computer operating system. Development started in 1976 at the Computer Laboratory of Cambridge University and it was headed by Dr. Martin Richards. The first version appeared in January 1978 and it originally ran on a PDP-11. Later it was ported to the Computer Automation LSI4 and the Data General Nova. Work on a Motorola 68000 version started in 1981 at the University of Bath. MetaComCo acquired the rights to the 68000 version and continued development until TRIPOS was chosen by Commodore in March 1985 to form part of an operating system for their new Amiga computer; it was also used at Cambridge as part of the Cambridge Distributed Computing System. Sussex County Cricket Club is the oldest of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Sussex.
