R-class Sydney Tram
The R-class trams were a class of drop-centre saloon car type trams operated on the Trams in Sydney, Sydney tram network. History Class leader 1738 was unveiled in a ceremony at Randwick Bus Depot, Randwick Tramway Workshops on 29 September 1933. All 195 cars were in service by mid-1935. Passengers were accommodated in two saloons featuring 16 tip-over upholstered seats in each, plus wooden seating for 16 in the centre section. The relatively low seating capacity of only 48 (compared to the older toastrack trams) and their inability to operate in service as multiple units went against the class. The last five of the order for 200 tramcars were altered during construction to a modified design with increased seating capacity, becoming prototypes for the Sydney R1-Class Tram, R1 class, resulting in only 195 being completed to the original (R class) design. Tempe Bus Depot
Tempe Bus Depot (formerly Tempe Tram Depot) is a bus depot in the Sydney suburb of Tempe. It is currently operated by Transit Systems. The depot survived the closure of Sydney's former tram network and provided storage for the buses that replaced the trams. History Tempe Tram Depot opened on 15 September 1912 as an eighteen road depot on the corner of the Princes Highway and Gannon Street, Tempe. It served the Cooks River, Marrickville and Dulwich Hill lines. It closed on 20 November 1954 to become a bus depot, that in turn closed in January 1992. The tramshed and outlying offices were leased in 1986 to the Sydney Bus Museum, formally opening in April 1988. The forecourt was used to store withdrawn State Transit buses. Museum Of Transport And Technology
The Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) is a transport and technology museum located in Western Springs, Auckland, New Zealand. It is located close to the Western Springs Stadium, Auckland Zoo and the Western Springs Park. The museum has large collections of civilian and military aircraft and other land transport vehicles. An ongoing programme is in place to restore and conserve items in the collections. This work is largely managed by volunteers but, since the passing of the Museum of Transport and Technology Act in 2000, has been supported by full-time professional museum staff. New public programmes and facilities now promote the collections. Christchurch Tramway
The Christchurch tramway system is a small tramway network serving the inner city of Christchurch, New Zealand. Historically, it was an extensive network, with steam and horse trams from 1882 and then electric trams ran from 1905 to 1954, when the last line from Cashmere to Papanui was replaced by buses. In 1995, a central city loop heritage tram was reopened in the central city as a tourist attraction. This has now been is extended with a loop down to High Street which was opened in February 2015. Narrabeen
Narrabeen is a beachside suburb of northern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 23 kilometres northeast of the business district, shared by the local government area of Northern Beaches Council and the Northern Beaches region. The bay was named Broken Bay by James Cook as he sailed past. History There are a number of theories on the origin of the name "Narrabeen". The most fanciful is that Narrabeen is named after "narrow beans" which the English in the first year of settlement (1788) found and ate from a vine growing over beach sand. Surgeon White indeed recorded getting ill from such beans but this was well north of Narrabeen, near Broken Bay. The name Narrobine Creek appears in 1801 in records relating to two escaped convicts, and thus the name appears to have been in use before then. Sydney Tramway Museum
The Sydney Tramway Museum, operated by the South Pacific Electric Railway Co-operative Society, is Australia's oldest tramway museum and the largest in the southern hemisphere. It is located at Loftus in the southern suburbs of Sydney. History Construction of the museum at its original site on the edge of the Royal National Park commenced in August 1956. It was officially opened in March 1965 by NSW Deputy Premier Pat Hills. The facilities were basic, initially a four-track shed built with second hand materials and approximately 800 metres of running track.
