''R-Type'' is a science-fiction themed horizontally scrolling shooter franchise developed and published by Irem for arcade systems and home game platforms. The first entry in the series, ''R-Type'', was released in 1987 and was followed by several sequels for other platforms. Ten games in total have been released in the series. Other pieces of media, such as plastic-resin model kits, soundtrack albums and literature, were also produced. The series centers on an intergalactic war between humans and the Bydo, a powerful extraterrestrial race that are made from both biological lifeforms and mechanical structures. R-Type
is a horizontally scrolling shooter arcade video game developed and released by Irem in 1987 and the first game in the ''R-Type'' series. The player controls a star ship, the R-9 "Arrowhead", in its efforts to destroy the Bydo, a powerful alien race bent on wiping out all of mankind. The R-9 can acquire a glowing orbicular device called a "Force", protecting it from enemy fire and providing additional firepower. The arcade version was distributed by Nintendo in North America; it is the last arcade title Nintendo distributed. ''R-Type'' was the first game to run on Irem's 16-bit M72 arcade system. Super R-Type
is a shooter game for the Super NES, developed and published by Irem in 1991. It is a partial port of ''R-Type II'', borrowing stages and enemies, but introducing several of its own. The game has been re-released on the Wii Virtual Console in 2008, and on the Nintendo Classics service in 2024. Gameplay ''Super R-Type'' borrows four stages from ''R-Type II'' and adds three new ones. The game is known for its high difficulty (even compared to other games in the series), particularly because of its lack of checkpoints, since dying means restarting the level from scratch. Also, this game suffers from slowdown, which was also a problem in many early games for this system.
