Coal Harbour (Vancouver Island)
Coal Harbour is a harbour and community on northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada located on the north side of Holberg Inlet in the Quatsino Sound region. It is named after a small and unsuccessful local coal mine that was founded in 1883. The village's most successful industry, however, was whaling. It was the last whaling station in British Columbia when it closed in 1967. The station utilized the original buildings of the RCAF. RCAF Coal Harbour The townsite and surrounding area was the site of a Royal Canadian Airforce base for seaplane patrols in the Northern Pacific during World War II. Many of the original buildings still remain, such as the general store (the old gymnasium), and the officers' barracks immediately overlooking the harbour. Montague Tyrwhitt-Drake
Montague William Tyrwhitt-Drake (January 20, 1830 – April 19, 1908) was an English-born lawyer, judge and political figure in British Columbia, Canada. Tyrwhitt-Drake represented Victoria City in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1882 to 1886. Career He was born in King's Walden, Hertfordshire, the son of the Reverend George Tyrwhitt-Drake, and was admitted to practice in England in 1851. Tyrwhitt-Drake came to British Columbia in 1863, settling in Victoria. He represented Victoria in the Legislative Council of British Columbia from 1868 to 1870. From 1872 to 1879, he served as a member of the Board of Education for British Columbia. He was called to the British Columbia bar in 1877. Tyrwhitt-Drake was mayor of Victoria from 1876 to 1877. Quatsino Provincial Park
Quatsino Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada, located on Quatsino Sound on northern Vancouver Island. History The park was established July 12, 1995. Conservation This undeveloped park protects some of the largest old-growth trees, some small lakes, Koprino Harbour, which is a sheltered inlet, and the Koprino River estuary, which is noted for its critical fish-rearing and waterfowl habitat. The park also protects nesting and feeding habitat that is used by a high concentration of bald eagles. Black bears are very common in Quatsino Provincial Park, as are coastal black-tailed deer and cougars. Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon (and to a much lesser extent, the Sun) and are also caused by the Earth and Moon orbiting one another. Tidal race or tidal rapid is a natural occurrence whereby a fast-moving tide passes through a constriction, resulting in the formation of waves, eddies and hazardous currents. The constriction can be a passage where the sides narrow, for example the Gulf of Corryvreckan and the Saltstraumen maelstrom, or an underwater obstruction (a reef or rising seabed), such as is found at the Portland Race in the United Kingdom.
