Pruntytown, West Virginia
Pruntytown is an unincorporated community at the junction of the Northwestern Turnpike ( U.S. Route 50) and U.S. Route 250 in Taylor County, West Virginia, United States. It is the site of the former West Virginia Industrial Home for Boys, now the Pruntytown Correctional Center. History The first settlement at Pruntytown (the earliest known white settlement in what is now Taylor County) was made ''circa'' 1798 with pioneers John Prunty, Sr (1745-1823) and his son David (1768-1841). It was initially known as Cross Roads, from the intersection there of the old Clarksburg Pike and the old Beverly and Fairmont Road. On January 1, 1801 Cross Roads was renamed Williamsport in honor of Abraham Williams, a local resident. The name was changed again on January 23, 1845 to honor the Pruntys. West Virginia Industrial Home For Boys
The West Virginia Industrial Home for Boys was — from 1891 to 1983 — the state juvenile detention center for male offenders, located at Pruntytown near Grafton, West Virginia, USA. Young male offenders, aged 12 to 20 years, were sentenced to the facility beginning in 1891. Sentencing was by the juvenile courts, or justices of the peace, for incorrigibility and immorality, and by the criminal courts for felonies. Changes in philosophy regarding youth incarceration, beginning in the 1970s, led to population declines at the Industrial Home, and its sister institution, the West Virginia Industrial Home for Girls, which had opened in 1899 at Salem. In 1983, the Industrial School for Boys closed, the girls’ facility was redesignated as the West Virginia Industrial Home for Youth, and the boys were transferred to it. John Barton Payne
John Barton Payne (January 26, 1855January 24, 1935) was an American politician, lawyer and judge. He served as the United States Secretary of the Interior from 1920 until 1921 under Woodrow Wilson's administration. Early life and career Payne was born on January 26, 1855, in Pruntytown, West Virginia, the son of Amos Payne, who was a doctor and farmer, and the former Elizabeth Barton. Admitted to the bar in 1876 in West Virginia, Payne entered politics five years later as the chairman of the Preston County Democratic Party. He moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1883, and was elected in 1893 to the Superior Court of Cook County, which he served on until resigning from that post in 1898. After resigning his judgeship, Payne was the senior partner in Winston, Payne, Strawn and Shaw. A successor firm, Winston & Strawn, still exists. Grafton is a city in and the county seat of Taylor County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 4,729 at the 2020 census. It originally developed as a junction point for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, serving numerous branches of a network that was vital to the regional coal industry. Pruntytown Correctional Center (PCC) is a state prison for West Virginia, located at Pruntytown near Grafton, West Virginia, USA. The premises were previously used for a juvenile detention center known as the West Virginia Industrial Home for Boys, which closed in 1983.
