Progressive Riojan Party
The Riojan Party ( es, Partido Riojano) is a Spanish political party operating in the autonomous community of La Rioja. The party was formed as the Progressive Riojan Party ( es, Partido Riojano Progresista) on 6 December 1982 with the stated aim of occupying the progressive centre in La Rioja. History Initially the party was led by Luis Javier Rodriguez Moroy, a former MP in the Spanish Congress of Deputies. Like Rodriguez, many members of the new party came from the Union of the Democratic Centre (UCD), the former governing coalition of Spain which disbanded in February 1983. Rubén García Marañón succeeded Rodriguez as Party President in February 1984 and the party adopted its current name in 1991. Logroño
Logroño () is the capital of the province of La Rioja, situated in northern Spain. Traversed in its northern part by the Ebro River, Logroño has historically been a place of passage, such as the Camino de Santiago. Its borders were disputed between the Iberian kingdoms of Castille, Navarre and Aragon during the Middle Ages. The population of the city in 2021 was 150,808 while the metropolitan area included nearly 200,000 inhabitants. The city is a centre of trade of Rioja wine, for which the area is noted, and manufacturing of wood, metal and textile products. Etymology Origin of the name The origin of this toponym is, as for many other places, unknown. The name ''Lucronio'' was first used in a document from 965 where García Sánchez I of Pamplona donated the so-called place to the Monastery of San Millán. Spanish Municipal Elections, 2007
The 2007 Spanish local elections were held on Sunday, 27 May 2007, to elect all 66,131 councillors in the 8,111 municipalities of Spain and all 1,038 seats in 38 provincial deputations. The elections were held simultaneously with regional elections in thirteen autonomous communities, as well as local elections in the three foral deputations of the Basque Country and the eleven island councils in the Balearic and Canary Islands. The results saw few changes overall; most incumbent governments retained their majority, with only a few exceptions. The PP government in the Balearics fell, and a coalition led by PSOE took power. While the elections were seen as a first indication of how the 2008 Spanish general election might turn out, the results proved to be inconclusive. Riojan Parliamentary Election, 1991
The 1991 Riojan regional election was held on Sunday, 26 May 1991, to elect the 3rd General Deputation of the autonomous community of La Rioja. All 33 seats in the General Deputation were up for election. The election was held simultaneously with regional elections in twelve other autonomous communities and local elections all throughout Spain. The ruling Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) saw an increase in support and obtained 16 seats, one short of an overall majority. The newly founded People's Party (PP), whose leader Joaquín Espert had lost the regional government in 1990 to a motion of no confidence, won two additional seats compared to People's Alliance's results in 1987, for a total of 15. The 1999 Riojan regional election was held on Sunday, 13 June 1999, to elect the 5th Parliament of the autonomous community of La Rioja. All 33 seats in the Parliament were up for election. The election was held simultaneously with regional elections in twelve other autonomous communities and local elections all throughout Spain, as well as the 1999 European Parliament election. In a turnout below 69%, the People's Party (PP) under incumbent President Pedro Sanz was re-elected for a second term in office with an increased absolute majority. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) under former president José Ignacio Pérez Sáenz saw a slight increase in support, but the new PP majority meant that the party would remain in opposition.
