The prime minister of Haiti (French: , ht, Premye Minis Ayiti) is the head of government of Haiti. The office was created under the 1987 Constitution; previously, all executive power was held by the president or head of state, who appointed and chaired the Council of Ministers. The current prime minister of Haiti is Ariel Henry, who was sworn into office on 20 July 2021. Appointment The prime minister is appointed by the president and ratified by the National Assembly. Duties and powers The prime minister appoints the ministers and secretaries of state, and goes before the National Assembly to obtain a vote of confidence for their declaration of general policy. The prime minister enforces the laws and, along with the president, is responsible for national defense. Haitian French (french: français haïtien, Haitian Creole: ''fransè ayisyen'') is the variety of French spoken in Haiti. Haitian French is close to standard French. It should be distinguished from Haitian Creole. Phonology The phoneme consonant // is pronounced [], but it is often silent in the syllable coda when occurring before a consonant or prosodic break (''faire'' is pronounced [ː]). Gérard Latortue (born 19 June 1934 in Gonaïves) is a Haitian politician and diplomat who served as the prime minister of Haiti from 12 March 2004 to 9 June 2006. He was an official in the United Nations for many years, and briefly served as foreign minister of Haiti during the short-lived 1988 administration of Leslie Manigat.
