Edward Preble
Edward Preble (August 15, 1761 – August 25, 1807) was a United States naval officer who served with great distinction during the 1st Barbary War, leading American attacks on the city of Tripoli and forming the officer corps that would later lead the U.S. Navy in the War of 1812. Early life Preble was born at Falmouth, Eastern Massachusetts, now Portland, Maine, on August 15, 1761. He was the son of General Jedidiah Preble (1707–1784) and his second wife, Mehitable Roberts (née Bangs) Preble (1728–1805). He received his early education in Falmouth and later attended Dummer School in Byfield, Massachusetts. As a boy, his home was destroyed in the burning of Falmouth by British Naval Commander Henry Mowat. It is said that this action compelled Preble to join the Navy. Edward Alexander Preble
Edward Alexander Preble (born in Somerville, Massachusetts on ; died ) was an American naturalist and conservationist. He is noted for work in studying birds and mammals of the Pacific Northwest. He also acted as an editor for nature magazines. In 1908, Preble published a report on the natural history of the Athabaska-Mackenzie region, or "Boreal America". This monograph was based his two expeditions, in 1901 and again in 1903-4, with the U.S. Biological Survey. In 1907, Preble and Ernest Thompson Seton discovered the remains of a wolf pack near a long abandoned cabin at the Great Slave Lake in Canada. The two verified the claim of the American frontiersman Charles "Buffalo" Jones, who a full decade earlier in 1897-1898 had traveled to the Arctic Circle in an attempt to capture live musk oxen. Preble is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 1,393 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Commodore Edward Preble, a naval hero. Preble is on the northern border of Cortland County and is north of the city of Cortland. History Preble is within the former Central New York Military Tract. The land was first settled around 1796. The town of Preble was organized in 1808, the year Cortland County was formed, from the town of Tully (now in Onondaga County). Preble was one of the original towns of the county when it was formed. The town was reduced in size by the later formation of the town of Scott. In 1865, the town's population was 1,267. Preble was a town in Brown County, Wisconsin, United States from 1859 to 1964. It ceased to exist as a jurisdiction in 1964, when by referendum it consolidated with the city of Green Bay. Origin of town name The town's name may originate from Commodore Edward Preble, who served in the Tripolitan War of 1803. It is also possible that Peter Faenger, who migrated from Preble, Germany, named the town, or that Chauncey N. Aldrich named it after his birthplace of Preble, New York. History Peter Faenger and a group of German settlers first occupied the area in 1836. One of the first buildings erected by the early settlers was a church served by a priest from Green Bay. According to the few extant memoirs from the time, "the farm houses were made of hewn logs, chinked with mud, roofed with hand split shingles, floored with rough planks, and gathered in small groups, along the highway." Fort Preble
Fort Preble was a military fort in South Portland, Maine, United States, built in 1808 and progressively added to through 1906. The fort was active during all major wars from the War of 1812 through World War II. The fort was deactivated in 1950. It is now on the campus of Southern Maine Community College. Construction Secretary of War Henry Dearborn authorized construction of Fort Preble in 1808 with his son, Massachusetts Militia officer and future general Henry A. S. Dearborn, supervising the construction. The fort was named in honor of Commodore Edward Preble, who led a squadron of American warships during the Barbary Wars. Preble died in Portland in 1807 and is buried there. The initial construction at Fort Preble was part of the Second System of US fortifications.
