Postal Square Building
The Postal Square Building (formerly the City Post Office) served as the main post office for the city of Washington, D.C., from the building's completion in 1914 to 1986. It now houses the National Postal Museum, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and offices of the United States Senate. Architect Daniel Burnham designed the building in the Beaux-Arts style—the same style Burnham used for the neighboring Union Station. Construction for the Postal Square Building began in 1911 on a lot near the Capitol. Planning began with a 1901 proposal by the Senate Parks Commission. The commission called for three buildings to mark the northern end of the Capitol complex. While the first two buildings in the plan, Union Station and the Postal Square Building, were completed early in the 20th century, the 1901 plan would not be fully implemented until the completion of the Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building in 1992. The Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History, also commonly known as the Cardinal Spellman Philatelic Museum, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation of diversity through the medium of postage stamps and postal history. Location The museum is located at 235 Wellesley Street, at Regis College, Weston, Massachusetts. The museum has limited hours and is open to the public on Thursdays through Sundays except in July and August when the museum is closed on Sundays. It was established through joint agreement between the United States Postal Service and the Smithsonian Institution and opened in 1993. The National Philatelic Museum, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was a short-lived not-for-profit organization intended to create awareness of and offer courses on philately. The museum was the brainchild of Bernard Davis, a wealthy banker and avid stamp collector. The museum, at Broad and Diamond Streets in downtown Philadelphia, opened its doors on December 5, 1948. The museum offered a variety of services, including presentation of exhibits in frames for public viewing and a philatelic library. Boys Town, officially Father Flanagan's Boys' Home, is a non-profit organization based in Boys Town, Nebraska, dedicated to caring for children and families. History Boys Town was founded on December 12, 1917, as an orphanage for boys. Originally known as "The City of Little Men", the organization was begun by Edward J. Flanagan, a Roman Catholic priest, while he worked in the Diocese of Omaha. Using a loan of $90, he first rented a home at 25th and Dodge streets, in Omaha, to care for five boys, the first of whom was named John Kresse. Fort Walton Mound
The Fort Walton Mound ( 8OK6) is an archaeological site located in present-day Fort Walton Beach, Florida, United States. The large platform mound was built about 850 CE by the Pensacola culture, a local form of the Mississippian culture. Because of its significance, the mound was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964. Still reduced by time, the massive mound is still high and wide at the base. It was an expression of a complex culture, built by a hierarchical society whose leaders planned and organized the labor of many workers for such construction. The mound served combined ceremonial, political and religious purposes. At the center of the village and its supporting agricultural lands, the mound served as the platform for the temple and residence of the chief. Franklin Post Office
The Old Log Post Office, also known as the Franklin Post Office is an historic building located in Franklin, Ohio. Built in 1802, the two-story log cabin is the oldest surviving post office in the state and the oldest building in Franklin. On April 1, 1805, President Thomas Jefferson appointed the first postmaster, John N. C. Schenck. The post office was his home. It was originally at 310 River Street but was moved to its present site near the corner of 5th and River streets in 1974. The Florida Postal Museum is a museum dedicated the preserving the history of postal items, postal history, and postal service. History The museum was founded in 1992 when Joe Guthrie, the Postmaster of DeLand, Florida, permitted the establishment of a small (6 foot by 10 foot) postal museum inside the post office. It was recognized by the U.S. Postal Service in 1996 as the DeLand Postal Museum. When the DeLand post office location was closed in June 1997, the museum moved to a historic building called the 1876 Heritage Inn. On February 25, 2000, its grand opening was held. The Casa de Correos y Telegrafos (Post and Telegraphs office) is the central post office of the city of Lima, Peru. The building is located in the Historic center of Lima near the Plaza Mayor.
