''Portrait of the Artist Holding a Thistle'' (or '' Eryngium'') is an oil painting on parchment pasted on canvas by German artist Albrecht Dürer. Painted in 1493, it is the earliest of Dürer's painted self-portraits and has been identified as one of the first self-portraits painted by a Northern artist. It was acquired in 1922 by the Louvre in Paris. Dürer looks out at the viewer with a psychologically complex but rather melancholy and reserved, serious minded, facial expression. During the 15th century, thistles were symbols of male conjugal fidelity. History In 1493, Dürer was 22 years old and working in Strasbourg. He had completed his apprenticeship with Michael Wolgemut and his tour as a journeyman, and would marry Agnes Frey on 7 July 1494. The date and the plant in the artist's hand seem to suggest that this is a betrothal portrait (''Brautporträt''). Thistle
Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterised by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae. Prickles can also occur all over the planton the stem and on the flat parts of the leaves. These prickles are an adaptation that protects the plant from being eaten by herbivores. Typically, an involucre with a clasping shape similar to a cup or urn subtends each of a thistle's flower heads. The comparative amount of spininess varies dramatically by species. For example, ''Cirsium heterophyllum'' has minimal spininess while ''Cirsium spinosissimum'' is the opposite. Typically, species adapted to dry environments have greater spininess. Jane Campbell Hutchison
Jane Campbell Hutchison (July 20, 1932 – July 12, 2020) was an American art historian specialising in the old master prints of the Northern Renaissance. She was best known for her 1990 biography of Albrecht Dürer, which was translated into German and Japanese. She was born in Washington, D.C. and grew-up in the suburb of District Heights, Maryland. After studying art history at Oberlin College, Hutchison in 1964 obtained a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a dissertation on the Master of the Housebook supervised by James Watrous. She taught at the University of Wisconsin for almost 50 years, from 1964 to 2012. She died, aged 87, in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Giulia Bartrum
Giulia Bartrum (born 1954) is an art historian and museum professional who was Curator of German prints and drawings at the British Museum in London, England between 1991 and 2019. Career Bartrum joined the British Museum's Department of Prints and Drawings in 1979. She became Curator of German prints and drawings in 1991. In the latter role she was also responsible for coordinating between departments, research into the provenance history of items held in the British Museum collections which may relate to the Nazi era. Bartrum's first book was ''German renaissance prints 1490–1550'', which was the catalogue of an exhibition held at the museum during 1995. Marcel Brion
Marcel Brion (; 21 November 1895 – 23 October 1984) was a French essayist, literary critic, novelist, and historian. Early life The son of a lawyer, Brion was classmates in Thiers with Marcel Pagnol and Albert Cohen. After completing his secondary education in Collège Champittet, Switzerland, he studied law at the University of Aix-en-Provence. Career Counsel to the bar of Marseille between 1920 and 1924, he abandoned his legal career to turn to literature. Brion wrote nearly a hundred books in his career, ranging from historical biography to examinations of Italian and German art, and turning later in life to novels. Sir Lawrence Burnett Gowing (21 April 1918 – 5 February 1991) was an English artist, writer, curator and teacher. Initially recognised as a portrait and landscape painter, he quickly rose to prominence as an art educator, writer, and eventually, curator and museum trustee. Gold Ground
Gold ground (both a noun and adjective) or gold-ground (adjective) is a term in art history for a style of images with all or most of the background in a solid gold colour. Historically, real gold leaf has normally been used, giving a luxurious appearance. The style has been used in several periods and places, but is especially associated with Byzantine and medieval art in mosaic, illuminated manuscripts and panel paintings, where it was for many centuries the dominant style for some types of images, such as icons.
