Popular Initiative In Switzerland
In Switzerland, a popular initiative (German language, German: ''Volksinitiative'', French language, French: ''Initiative populaire'', Italian language, Italian: ''Iniziativa popolare'', Romansh language, Romansh: ''Iniziativa dal pievel'') allows the people to suggest law on a national, Cantons of Switzerland, cantonal, and Municipalities of Switzerland, municipal level. On a federal level it may only change the Swiss Federal Constitution, federal constitution, not propose an ordinary law. Along with the Referendums by country#Switzerland, popular referendum and in some cantons Recall election#Switzerland, recall elections, it is a form of direct democracy. History Popular initiatives were introduced as a tool at the federal level in the 1891 partial revision of the Swiss Federal Constitution.
