Poor Relations
''Poor Relations'' is a 1919 American silent drama film directed by King Vidor. Produced by the Brentwood Corporation, the film starred Vidor’s wife Florence Vidor and featured comedienne Zasu Pitts. The picture is the final of four Christian Science precept films that represent a brief phase in Vidor’s output championing the superiority of self-healing through moral strength and supplemented by the benefits of rural living. Plot Country girl Dorothy Perkins succeeds as an architect in the city, but then is scorned by her old-money in-laws. King Vidor
King Wallis Vidor (; February 8, 1894 – November 1, 1982) was an American film director, film producer, and screenwriter whose 67-year film-making career successfully spanned the silent and sound eras. His works are distinguished by a vivid, humane, and sympathetic depiction of contemporary social issues. Considered an auteur director, Vidor approached multiple genres and allowed the subject matter to determine the style, often pressing the limits of film-making conventions. His most acclaimed and successful film in the silent era is '' The Big Parade'' (1925). Vidor's sound films of the 1940s and early 1950s arguably represent his richest output. ''Motion Picture Daily'' was an American daily magazine focusing on the film industry. It was published by Quigley Publishing Company, which also published the '' Motion Picture Herald''. The magazine was formed by the merging of three existing Quigley publications: ''Exhibitors Trade Review'', ''Exhibitors Daily Review'', and ''Motion Pictures Today''. The first issue was published in April 1931. The magazine was in circulation until 1972. History Martin Quigley had obtained several magazines during the 1910s and 1920s. Raymond Durgnat (1 September 1932 – 19 May 2002) was a British film critic, who was born in London to Swiss parents. During his life he wrote for virtually every major English language film publication. In 1965 he published the first major critical essay on Michael Powell, who had hitherto been "fashionably dismissed by critics as a 'technician’s director'", as Durgnat put it. His many books include ''Films and Feelings'' (1967), ''A Mirror for England: British Movies from Austerity to Affluence'' (1970), and ''The Strange Case of Alfred Hitchcock'' (1974). A print of the film is held by the Cinémathèque de Toulous.
