Politics Of Kiribati
Politics of Kiribati takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the ''Beretitenti'', President of Kiribati, is both the head of state and head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government, Beretitenti, and his cabinet, all MPs. Legislative power is exercised by the House of Assembly. The Judiciary of Kiribati is independent of the executive and the legislature. The Constitution of Kiribati, promulgated at independence on 12 July 1979, establishes the Republic of Kiribati as a sovereign democratic republic and guarantees the fundamental rights of its citizens and residents. The vice-president of Kiribati ( gil, Kauoman-ni-Beretitenti) is the deputy head of State of the Republic of Kiribati. His or her constitutional functions are to exercise the duties of the President of Kiribati, temporarily or permanently, should the latter be unable to do so, and to "be responsible for such business of the government (including the administration of any department) as the Beretitenti residentmay assign to him". The President appoints a Vice-President from among the government ministers. The Vice-President must remain a member of Cabinet throughout his or her term. Phoenix Islands
The Phoenix Islands, or Rawaki, are a group of eight atolls and two submerged coral reefs that lie east of the Gilbert Islands and west of the Line Islands in the central Pacific Ocean, north of Samoa. They are part of the Republic of Kiribati. Their combined land area is . The only island of any commercial importance is Canton Island (also called Abariringa). The other islands are Enderbury, Rawaki (formerly Phoenix), Manra (formerly Sydney), Birnie, McKean, Nikumaroro (formerly Gardner), and Orona (formerly Hull). The Line Islands, Teraina Islands or Equatorial Islands (in Gilbertese, ''Aono Raina'') are a chain of 11 atolls (with partly or fully enclosed lagoons) and coral islands (with a surrounding reef) in the central Pacific Ocean, south of the Hawaiian Islands. The island chain stretches northwest to southeast across , making it one of the longest island chains in the world. It lies at the geographic center of the Pacific Ocean (), near Starbuck Island. Taabeta Teakai
Taabeta Teakai is the Minister of Employment and Human Resources in Kiribati. She was the only female member of the government appointed in 2020. Political career In the April 2020 elections Teakai was one of four women elected out of 45 members of ''Maneaba ni Maungatabu'', the House of Assembly of Kiribati, the highest number of women represented in parliament until then. During the first round of voting in the South Tarawa constituency she polled second but was first after the second ballot. Three members were elected from this constituency. It was the first time Teakai had been elected. As Minister of Employment and Human Resources, Teakai was sworn in on 2 July 2020. On that day she announced that she was setting a number of targets for completion within 100 days.
