Point Cartwright Light
Point Cartwright Light is an active lighthouse located on Point Cartwright, a point near the mouth of the Mooloolah River, in Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia. It marks the entrance to the North West Channel, a deep water channel into Moreton Bay and the Port of Brisbane, and provides guidance into the Mooloolaba Harbour. History Old Caloundra Light, construction in 1896, was the first to serve the purpose of marking the entrance to the North West Channel. Changes in the shipping industry in the 1960s necessitated the construction of a modern signal and radar station, and thus New Caloundra Light was erected in 1967. However, New Caloundra Light was to have a short lifespan as a coastal light. By 1978 the buildings in Caloundra had grown in height, obscuring it from some angles. Point Cartwright
Point Cartwright is a rocky headland at the mouth of the Mooloolah River in Queensland, Australia, renowned for its scenic beauty and landmark lighthouse, Point Cartwright Light. It is located 14 km north of Caloundra. History The headland was named Point Raper in 1861 by Lieutenant Heath of the Royal Navy. Some time after 1861 the current name of Point Cartwright was bestowed on the point thought to have been named after Edmund Cartwright who developed weaving and combing equipment in the industrial revolution. Cartwright's invention was closely associated with Sir Richard Arkwright's machinery invented for cotton spinning factories. It is thought that at the same time that Point Cartwright was named, the headland known as Petrie Heads was also renamed to Point Arkwright. It is not known who changed the name to Point Cartwright and Point Arkwright or why they were changed, but it is obvious they are intended to be grouped. New Burnett Heads Light
The New Burnett Heads Light, also known as South Head Light, is an active lighthouse standing on the south side of the Burnett River entrance, in Burnett Heads, Queensland, Australia. In 1971 it replaced the Old Burnett Heads Light, which was relocated inland. History The Old Burnett Heads Light stood on the south side of the Burnett River entrance between 1873 and 1971, when it was replaced with this tower. The new lighthouse was the fourth of a group of seven concrete towers erected by the Commonwealth between 1964 and 1979, by order of construction, Cape Capricorn Light, New Caloundra Light, Point Danger Light, itself, Fitzroy Island Light, Point Cartwright Light and Archer Point Light.
