''Poet Artist'' is the second and final studio album by South Korean singer-songwriter Jonghyun, released posthumously on January 23, 2018, through SM and Genie. The album had been confirmed in December 2017 and was completed prior to Jonghyun's death, of which it was announced a day after. Upon release, the album debuted at number 177 on the US ''Billboard'' 200, the album being his first to chart on the list. Background and release In early November 2017, Jonghyun announced a two-date concert in Seoul's SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium. The concert, titled Inspired, was held in Seoul on December 9 and 10. His teleprompter included an announcement for his upcoming studio album, but he ignored it at the time. On December 18, it was reported that Jonghyun had died. Kim Jong-hyun (singer)
Kim Jong-hyun (April 8, 1990 – December 18, 2017), known mononymously as Jonghyun, was a South Korean singer-songwriter, record producer, radio host, and author under the SM Entertainment label. He was the main vocalist of the South Korean boy band Shinee for nine years, releasing twelve albums with the group in both Korean and Japanese. He also participated in SM Entertainment's project group, SM the Ballad, for the release of two EP albums. Jonghyun was also a solo artist, beginning in January 2015 with the release of his first EP album, '' Base''. The Golden Disc Awards (, formerly spelled the Golden Disk Awards before 2015) is an annual South Korean major music awards ceremony that honors achievements in the local music industry. Album-equivalent Unit
The album-equivalent unit, or album equivalent, is a measurement unit in music industry to define the consumption of music that equals the purchase of one album copy. This consumption includes streaming and song downloads in addition to traditional album sales. The album-equivalent unit was introduced in the mid-2010s as an answer to the drop of album sales in the 21st century. Album sales more than halved from 1999 to 2009, declining from a $14.6 to $6.3 billion industry. For instance, the only albums that went platinum in the United States in 2014 were the '' Frozen'' soundtrack and Taylor Swift's ''1989'', whereas several artists' works had in 2013.
