Petrolia is an unincorporated community in Humboldt County, California, northeast of Cape Mendocino, at an elevation of above sea level, within ZIP Code 95558, and area code 707. Petrolia was the site of the first oil well drilled in California. Description Petrolia has an estimated population of 300-500 people within a 15-mile radius. It is located in the Mattole Valley, part of the Lost Coast region, one of the largest wilderness areas and the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the continental United States. Petrolia's isolation is due to its position on the rocky, treacherous coastline adjacent to the King Range mountains that isolate this area from mainland California and continue to leave the area almost completely undeveloped. Petrolia is an unincorporated community in Allen County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the Neosho River. History In 1910, Petrolia had a money order postoffice, an express office, and was a trading point for the neighborhood. The population that year was 200. Petrolia had a post office from July 1905 until September 1953. Geography Petrolia is located in Sections 31–32, Township 26 south, Range 18 east. Less than a mile from the southern border of Allen County, it is situated west of the Neosho River and to the south of Scatter Creek. Contained entirely within Logan Township, it is about 5 miles south-southwest of Humboldt and 13 miles from Iola (the county seat). Petrolia is a town in southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is part of Lambton County and is surrounded by Enniskillen Township. It is billed as "Canada's Victorian Oil Town" and is often credited with starting the oil industry in North America, a claim shared with the nearby town of Oil Springs. Lambton Central Collegiate & Vocational Institute (LCCVI) is located in Petrolia. History In 1857 James Miller Williams of Hamilton began distilling some of the "tar" lying around Oil Springs (located a few kilometers south from Petrolia), after buying the property rights from Charles Nelson Tripp. In July or August 1858 he struck an oil deposit in Oil Springs while digging a shallow well, sparking the oil drilling industry.
