Pennsylvania General Assembly
The Pennsylvania General Assembly is the legislature of the U.S. commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The legislature convenes in the State Capitol building in Harrisburg. In colonial times (1682–1776), the legislature was known as the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly and was unicameral. Since the Constitution of 1776, the legislature has been known as the General Assembly. The General Assembly became a bicameral legislature in 1791. Membership The General Assembly has 253 members, consisting of a Senate with 50 members and a House of Representatives with 203 members, making it the second-largest state legislature in the nation, behind New Hampshire, and the largest full-time legislature. Senators are elected for a term of four years. Representatives are elected for a term of two years. In law, codification is the process of collecting and restating the law of a jurisdiction in certain areas, usually by subject, forming a legal code, i.e. a codex (book) of law. Codification is one of the defining features of civil law jurisdictions. Purdon's Pennsylvania Statutes is an unofficial consolidation of the statutes of Pennsylvania, a state of the United States of America. The state's statutes are organized into 79 topic groups, ranging from "Aeronautics" to "Zoning," spread across 107 volumes. An alternate publication, "Purdon's Pennsylvania Statutes Annotated," includes the text of statutes, as well as cross-references, footnotes, and commentary developed over two centuries. The annotated version is comparable to the '' United States Code Annotated.'' In 2007, the Pennsylvania General Assembly struck a deal with Thomson West to post an unofficial version of the statutes for free online, making it the last state to freely provide its statutes online.
