Patricia S. Curley
Patricia S. Curley (born October 25, 1946) is an American lawyer and retired judge. She served on the Wisconsin Court of Appeals in the Milwaukee-based District I from 1996 until her retirement in 2016, and served as its presiding judge from 2007. Prior to her election to the Court of Appeals, she served 18 years as a Wisconsin circuit court judge in Milwaukee County. Biography Born in Milwaukee, Curley is the daughter of Judge Robert M. Curley, a legislator and Wisconsin Circuit Court judge. She received her bachelor's degree from Marquette University in 1969 and graduated from Marquette University Law School in 1973. From 1973 to 1978, Curley was employed as an assistant district attorney in Milwaukee County, serving in the office's sensitive crimes unit under District Attorney E. Michael McCann. Wisconsin Court Of Appeals
The Wisconsin Court of Appeals is an intermediate appellate court that reviews contested decisions of the Wisconsin circuit courts. The Court of Appeals was created in August 1978 to alleviate the Wisconsin Supreme Court's rising number of appellate cases. Published Court of Appeals opinions are considered binding precedent until overruled by the Supreme Court; unpublished opinions are not. The Court hears most appeals in three-judge panels, but appeals of circuit court decisions in misdemeanor, small claims, and municipal ordinance cases are decided by a single judge. Composition The Court of Appeals comprises 16 judges elected to six-year terms in four geographic districts. The Milwaukee County District Attorney is a state constitutional officer responsible for criminal prosecution in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. The current district attorney is John T. Chisholm, who has served since 2007. History The first Milwaukee County District Attorney was Charles James, who served a two-year term beginning in 1848. District attorneys from then until 2008 also served two-year terms in office. Since that year, the district attorney serves for four years. The position is not, and has never been, subject to term limits. In the first decade of the 1900s, district attorney Francis E. McGovern and his office investigated and prosecuted corrupt city officials. The administration of Mayor David Rose was notorious for this, often ignoring illegal activity. Madison is the county seat of Dane County and the capital city of the U.S. state of Wisconsin.
