Patricia Cahill (singer)
Patricia Cahill (3 March 1942 – 11 May 2022) was an Irish singer. Her first appearance in public was in Dublin's Theatre Royal at the age of seventeen. Career Cahill's first commercial recording, ''Ireland's Patricia Cahill sings for you'', was recorded in Dublin and was later reissued in the United States under the title ''Danny Boy''. In the late 1960s and early 1970s she appeared often on Irish television, many times with the stage star Maureen Potter. She took part in the 1965 Irish National Final for the Eurovision Song Contest with the song ''I Stand Still'' coming second. She appeared on the Val Doonican Show on 18 November 1970, and also appeared regularly on BBC Television's Songs of Praise, Hosted by Robert Dougal. Cahill also appeared on RTÉ TV's series A Handful of Songs, broadcast across the-then ITV network, during the early 1970s. Theatre Royal, Dublin
Over the centuries, there have been five theatres in Dublin called the Theatre Royal. In the history of the theatre in Great Britain and Ireland, the designation "Theatre Royal", or "Royal Theatre", once meant that a theatre had been granted a royal patent, without which "serious drama" theatrical performances were not permitted by law. Many such theatres had other names. The first Theatre Royal The first Theatre Royal was opened by John Ogilby in 1662 in Smock Alley. Ogilby, who was the first Irish Master of the Revels, had previously run the New Theatre in Werburgh Street. This was the first custom-built theatre in the city. Maureen Potter
Maria Philomena Potter (3 January 1925 – 7 April 2004), known as Maureen Potter, was an Irish singer, actress, comedienne and performer. Early life Potter was born in Dublin and educated at St. Mary's school in Fairview. She had a long career in Irish theatre, mainly as Ireland's première comedienne, but also as a straight actress. She was a regular performer at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin and for many years starred in Christmas pantomime. She became the first star to have a bronze cast of her handprints outside the theatre. She married Jack O'Leary in 1959, an Irish army officer whom she had first met in 1943, and he wrote most of her comedic material. Career Among Potter's many dramatic roles in the theatre was that of Maisie Madigan in ''Juno and the Paycock''. Ireland was represented by Butch Moore, with the song "Walking the Streets in the Rain", at the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 20 March in Naples. This was the first time Ireland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest. Before Eurovision National final The final was held at the studios of broadcaster RTÉ in Dublin, hosted by Bunny Carr. Twelve songs took part, with the winner chosen by voting from twelve regional juries. Other participants included future Irish representative Dickie Rock (1966). Michael Valentine Doonican (3 February 1927 – 1 July 2015) was an Irish singer of traditional pop, easy listening, and novelty songs, who was noted for his warm and relaxed style.
