The Party of the European Left (PEL), commonly abbreviated European Left, is a European political party that operates as an association of democratic socialist and communist political parties in the European Union and other European countries. It was formed in January 2004 for the purposes of running in the 2004 European Parliament elections. The PEL was founded on 8–9 May 2004 in Rome. The elected MEPs from member parties of the PEL sit in The Left in the European Parliament – GUE/NGL group in the European Parliament. Several member and observer parties participate also in the more radical European Anti-Capitalist Left. Before the PEL was founded, most of its members already held annual meetings together, as part of the New European Left Forum (NELF). The current president is the German politician and economist . 2004 European Parliament Election
The 2004 European Parliament election was held between 10 and 13 June 2004 in the 25 member states of the European Union, using varying election days according to local custom. The European Parliamental parties could not be voted for, but elected national parties aggregated in European Parliamental parties after the elections. Votes were counted as the polls closed, but results were not announced until 13 and 14 June so results from one country would not influence voters in another where polls were still open; however, the Netherlands, voting on Thursday 10, announced nearly complete provisional results as soon as they were counted, on the evening of its election day, a move heavily criticized by the European Commission. 342 million people were eligible to vote, the second-largest democratic electorate in the world after India. The Bulgarian Left ( bg, Българската левица, ''Bǎlgarskata levitsa'', BL) is a democratic socialist political party in Bulgaria. It was created in February 2009 predominantly by members of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), with its constituent congress taking place on 4 April 2009. Its leaders are Hristofor Dochev, Ivan Genov, and Margarita Mileva. A full member of the Party of the European Left (PEL) since September 2010, it is one of the few parties in the country to hold progressive views in regards to LGBT rights in Bulgaria. ''Granma'' is the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba. It was formed in 1965 by the merger of two previous papers, (from Spanish: "Revolution") and ("Today"). Publication of the newspaper began in February of 1966. Its name comes from the yacht '' Granma'' that carried Fidel Castro and 81 other rebels to Cuba's shores in 1956, launching the Cuban Revolution. Pierre Laurent (born 1 July 1957) is a French politician and journalist. Ex-director of ''L'Humanité'', and former leader of the French Communist Party (PCF). Career His father, Paul Laurent, was a member of the National Assembly of France for Paris and a high-ranking official of the French Communist Party. Pierre Laurent joined the Union of Communist Students (UEC) when he was studying economics in Paris. He was National Secretary of UEC from 1982 to 1985. After graduating with a master's degree in Economics, he became a journalist for ''L'Humanité''. At first specialized in economic issues, he became chief editor in 1999, and managing editor in 2000. He is a leading member of the Communist Refoundation Party (''Partito della Rifondazione Comunista''; PRC), and served as Minister of Social Solidarity from 2006 to 2008 as part of the Prodi II Cabinet.
