Palmyra Township is a Civil township, township in Douglas County, Kansas, United States, USA. As of the United States Census, 2000, 2000 census, its population was 5,760. It was named after a small trail stop on the Santa Fe Trail that was later absorbed into Baldwin City, Kansas, Baldwin City. When it was first established in 1855, it was called Calhoun, until 1858. Geography Palmyra Township covers an area of and contains one incorporated settlement, Baldwin City, Kansas, Baldwin City. According to the United States Geological Survey, USGS, it contains six cemeteries: Baldwin City, Brumbaugh, Oakwood, Old Black Jack, Prairie City and Vinland. The stream of Wymore Creek runs through this township. A civil township is a widely used unit of local government in the United States that is subordinate to a county, most often in the northern and midwestern parts of the country. Lawrence is the county seat of Douglas County, Kansas, Douglas County, Kansas, United States, and the sixth-largest city in the state. K-33 (Kansas Highway)
K-33 is an approximately north–south state highway in the U.S. state of Kansas. K-33's southern terminus is at K-68 in rural Franklin County east of Ottawa and the northern terminus is at U.S. Route 56 (US-56) in Douglas County, east of Baldwin City and southwest of Kansas City. K-33 provides an important link between US-56 and K-68 to Interstate 35 (I-35) and US-50 in Wellsville. K-33 is a two-lane rural highway for most of its length, except for the section within Wellsville. Before state highways were numbered in Kansas, there were auto trails. The majority of K-33's route closely follows the former New Santa Fe Trail, King of Trails and Ozark Trail. K-33 was first designated as a state highway in 1926. Vinland, Kansas
Vinland is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. It is located south of Lawrence and north of Baldwin City. History The first settlement was made at Vinland in 1854. In the earliest days of the community, some called it "Coal Creek", due to deposits of the sedimentary rock in a nearby waterway. The settlement eventually earned the name "Vineland" (after the orchard of one of the first settlers, William Barnes), which later evolved into "Vinland" after a clerical error. Most of the settlers of the early community were abolitionists or Free-Staters from New England, and consequently, they opposed the extension of slavery into Kansas Territory. Prairie City is a ghost town in southeast Douglas County, Kansas, United States, near present-day Baldwin City. History Prairie City was founded in 1855 by James Lane, Dr. William Graham, Louis (Lewis) F. Green and Salmon S. Prouty after a dispute between Graham and Henry Barricklow of nearby Palmyra. The Battle of Black Jack took place on June 2, 1856, when antislavery forces, led by the noted abolitionist John Brown, attacked the encampment of Henry C. Pate near Baldwin City, Kansas. The battle is cited as one incident of "Bleeding Kansas" and a contributing factor leading up to the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865. Background In 1854, the U.S. Congress had passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act which stipulated that the residents of these territories would decide whether they wished to enter the Union as a slave or free state. This doctrine became known as popular sovereignty.
