Paddy Reilly
Patrick "Paddy" Reilly (born 18 October 1939) is an Irish folk singer and guitarist. Born in Rathcoole, County Dublin, he is one of Ireland's most famous balladeers and is best known for his renditions of "The Fields of Athenry", "Rose of Allendale" and "The Town I Loved So Well". Reilly released his version of "The Fields of Athenry" as a single in 1983; it was the most successful version of this song, remaining in the Irish charts for 72 weeks. He achieved number 1 in Ireland with the Liam Reilly (no relation) written song "Flight of Earls" in 1988. For years a solo performer, he joined The Dubliners in 1996 as a replacement for long-time member Ronnie Drew. Rathcoole, County Dublin
Rathcoole () is an outer suburban village, south-west of the city of Dublin, in the jurisdiction of South Dublin, Ireland. Rathcoole is also a civil parish in the Barony of Newcastle. Etymology Ráth is the Irish word for a ringfort, a circular embankment often erected by wealthy farmers or local chiefs. There are several forts in the civil parish of Rathcoole, one in a field between the village and Saggart village. There is no definite explanation for the name 'Rathcoole,' but it could well be ''Ráth Cumhaill meaning 'the ringfort of Cumhaill'', the father of Fionn mac Cumhaill. Coole may also come from the Irish word for forest, "coill." Location Rathcoole lies in the southwest "corner" of the traditional County Dublin, just off the N7 national primary road, southwest of Citywest and west of Saggart village. Ewan MacColl
James Henry Miller (25 January 1915 – 22 October 1989), better known by his stage name Ewan MacColl, was a folk singer-songwriter, folk song collector, labour activist and actor. Born in England to Scottish parents, he is known as one of the instigators of the 1960s folk revival as well as for writing such songs as " The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Dirty Old Town". MacColl collected hundreds of traditional folk songs, including the version of " Scarborough Fair" later popularised by Simon & Garfunkel, and released dozens of albums with A.L. Lloyd, Peggy Seeger and others, mostly of traditional folk songs. He also wrote many left-wing political songs, remaining a steadfast communist throughout his life and engaging in political activism.
