Ethel Maude Proffitt Stephenson (née Ethel Maude Proffitt) 1895–1982 was an American lawyer who practiced in Okemah and Tulsa specialising in the field of Native American civil rights. She was a senior member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, as well as a member of the Tulsa County Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Life Ethel Stephenson was born on 6 March 1895 in Rice, Kansas. Before beginning her legal career Ethel Stephenson was a teacher in Okemah where coincidentally her future husband, Logan Stephenson, had been principal before himself practicing law. After moving to Tulsa, Ethel Stephenson became a secretary for attorney Logan Stephenson and later studied law under him. Logan Stephenson was President of the State Bar of Oklahoma in 1939 (renamed the Oklahoma Bar Association in 1940)and had a large oil and gas law practice in the Tulsa Atlas Life Building. Frank Noah Proffitt (June 1, 1913 – November 24, 1965) was an Appalachian old time banjoist who preserved the song " Tom Dooley" in the form we know it today and was a key figure in inspiring musicians of the 1960s and 1970s to play the traditional five-string banjo. He was born in Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee, United States, and was raised in the Reese area of Watauga County, North Carolina, where he worked in a variety of jobs and lived on a farm with his wife and six children. Morgan Elizabeth Proffitt (born August 22, 1994) is a former American soccer player who lastly played for Reign FC in the NWSL. She previously played for SK Slavia Praha in the Czech First Division and the Washington Spirit and Chicago Red Stars in the NWSL. She now works for Lexington Sporting Club, a new USL One team. Shane Profitt (born January 17, 2000) is an American country music singer. He made his debut in 2022 with the single "How It Oughta Be". Biography Shane Profitt was born in Columbia, Tennessee. Profitt began playing guitar in 2018 when his grandfather gave him one for Christmas. After this, he began learning to perform cover songs at local venues in addition to writing his own material. After encountering a woman at a guitar store, he took her on a date to a sushi restaurant where he met country music singer Chris Janson and his wife, Kelly, who is also his manager. The Jansons signed Profitt to a songwriting contract, which led to Janson recording two of his songs on his 2021 album ''All In''. Stanley Proffitt (8 October 1910 – 3 January 1999) was an English cricketer. Proffitt was a left-handed batsman who bowled slow left-arm orthodox. He was born at Oldham, Lancashire. Despite being born in Lancashire, it was for Essex that he made his first-class debut for against Sussex in the 1937 County Championship. He made six further first-class appearances in that season, the last of which came against Gloucestershire. In his seven first-class matches, he scored 170 runs at a batting average of 12.14, with a high score of 39. Proffitt's was a department store chain based in Alcoa, Tennessee. The chain was founded in 1919 by David W. Proffitt and James Ellis. In 2006, the Proffitt's and McRae's stores were converted into Belk after Belk had acquired the two chains in July 2005 from Saks, Inc. At the time of their demise they operated 47 Proffitts & McRae's stores. History Beginnings Jeweler David W. Proffitt and James Ellis founded the Ellis-Proffitt Co. on Main Street in downtown Maryville, Tennessee, in 1919. The first store had seven departments: ladies ready-to-wear, ladies accessories, millinery, men's shoes, dry goods, and bargain basement.
