''Prehistoric Peeps'' is a 1905 British one-reeler film, starring Sebastian Smith, directed by Lewin Fitzhamon and produced by the Hepworth Manufacturing Company. The only existing print has been preserved by the British Film Institute.Merkl (2015), p. 278 The film is one of the "cavemen comedies", an early film genre which was inspired by the cartoon series '' Prehistoric Peeps'' by Edward Tennyson Reed.Merkl (2015), p. 278 The film depicts the first onscreen non-avian dinosaurs in film history, portrayed by actors inside pantomime models. A copy of the film was uploaded onto YouTube in 2024. Plot The film depicts the dream of a sleeping scientist. He dreams of being lowered into a cave, surrounded by its stalactites. A prehistoric monster comes to life, and chases him within the cave. A short film is a film with a low running time. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of not more than 40 minutes including all credits". Other film organizations may use different definitions, however; the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, for example, currently defines a short film as 45 minutes or less in the case of documentaries, and 59 minutes or less in the case of scripted narrative films (it is not made clear whether this includes closing credits). In the United States, short films were generally termed short subjects from the 1920s into the 1970s when confined to two 35 mm reels or less, and featurettes for a film of three or four reels. "Short" was an abbreviation for either term.
