Post Road (play)
''Post Road'' is a two-act, four-scene play written by Wilbur Daniel Steele and Norma Mitchell, and staged by H. C. Potter. It is a comedy, albeit with some serious overtones in its mystery plot. It has a medium-sized cast, moderate pacing, and only one setting. The action occurs in the living room of Emily Madison's rambling ancestral home on the Boston Post Road in Connecticut during October 1934. Emily Madison provides accommodations for tourists, and the plot hinges on a party of four who descend on her one week in October. There are no romantic elements in the storyline, and middle-aged characters predominate. The play was produced by H. C. Potter and George Haight. It had moderate box office success on Broadway, running for 209 performances. Its success depended heavily on the comedy of the character George Preble, played by Percy Kilbride in the original production. Wilbur Daniel Steele (17 March 1886, Greensboro, North Carolina – 26 May 1970, Stamford, Connecticut) was a U.S. author and playwright. Edna Holland
Edna Milton Holland (September 20, 1895 – May 4, 1982) was an American actress. Her stage, screen and television lasted from the beginning of the 20th century to 1965. Holland was the daughter of comedian Edmund Milton Holland and actress Emity Seward. Her uncle, Joseph Holland, was an actor. As a child, she played in stage productions by David Belasco. Beginning in 1915, Holland appeared in silent films, including ''Always in the Way'', ''The Feud Girl'', ''Mary Moreland'' and ''The Masked Rider''. She was often seen as "The Other Woman" to actresses such as Mary Miles Minter. After an absence of nearly 20 years and numerous stage roles, Holland resumed making films in the late 1930s. Middle-aged, she often portrayed "professional women such as teachers, nurses or secretaries" in supporting roles or minor parts. The Ambassador Theatre is a Broadway theater at 219 West 49th Street in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Opened in 1921, the Ambassador Theatre was designed by Herbert J. Krapp and was constructed for the Shubert brothers. It has 1,125 seats across two levels and is operated by The Shubert Organization. The auditorium interior is a New York City designated landmark. The theater is oriented on a diagonal axis, maximizing seating capacity on its small site of . The facade is largely made of golden brick and is simple in design. Brooks Atkinson
Justin Brooks Atkinson (November 28, 1894 – January 14, 1984) was an American theatre critic. He worked for ''The New York Times'' from 1922 to 1960. In his obituary, the ''Times'' called him "the theater's most influential reviewer of his time." Atkinson became a ''Times'' theater critic in the 1920s and his reviews became very influential. He insisted on leaving the drama desk during World War II to report on the war; he received the Pulitzer Prize in 1947 for his work as the Moscow correspondent for the ''Times''. The ''Brooklyn Times-Union'' was an American newspaper published from 1848 to 1937. Launched in 1848 as the ''Williamsburgh Daily Times'', the publication became the ''Brooklyn Daily Times'' when the cities of Brooklyn and Williamsburg were unified in 1855. The newspaper supported the then-progressive Republican Party, and the Abolition movement. Walt Whitman was one of their reporters, and was later the managing editor after he left the ''Brooklyn Daily Eagle''. Herbert Yost (also credited as Barry O'Moore and Bertram Yost; December 8, 1879October 23, 1945) was an American actor who in a career that spanned nearly half a century performed predominantly on stage in stock companies and in numerous Broadway productions. Zamah Cunningham (November 29, 1892 – June 2, 1967) was an American stage, film, and television actress. She began her career appearing in uncredited bit parts for D. W.
