Porta Metronia (Rome Metro)
Porta Metronia, previously known with the name Amba Aradam-Ipponio, is an underground station under construction of Line C of the Rome Metro. The station will be located between two important interchanges of the Roman metro system – the station Fori Imperali-Colosseo ( Line B) and San Giovanni ( Line A). Construction works started in 2013. The station is expected to become operational with the inauguration of the extension of Line C from San Giovanni to Fori Imperiali-Colosseo in 2024. During excavation of the station in 2016, a Roman barracks dating back to the 2nd century AD was unearthed below street level. In the summer of 2020, in the wake of the protests triggered by the Black Lives Matter movement, Mayor Virginia Raggi proposed a record in the Capitoline Assembly, which was later approved, to name the station after the Italian-Somali partisan Giorgio Marincola. Aurelian Walls
The Aurelian Walls () are a line of city walls built between 271 AD and 275 AD in Rome, Italy, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Aurelian. They superseded the earlier Servian Wall built during the 4th century BC. The walls enclosed all the seven hills of Rome plus the Campus Martius and, on the right bank of the Tiber, the Trastevere district. Porta Metronia is a gate in the third-century Aurelian Walls of Rome, Italy. The gate is located in the southern section of the wall between Porta San Giovanni to the east and Porta Latina to the south. During the tenth century, beyond this gate was marshland called the ''Prata Decii'' or the ''Decenniae''.Gregorovius, Ferdinand, ''History of the City of Rome in the Middle Ages'', Volume 3 (1895), pg. 530 At the end of the Middle Ages, the gate was closed and the entrance bricked up. The Battle of Amba Aradam (also known as the Battle of Enderta) was fought on the northern front of what was known as the Second Italo-Abyssinian War. This battle consisted of attacks and counter-attacks by Italian forces under Marshal of Italy Pietro Badoglio and Ethiopian forces under ''Ras'' Mulugeta Yeggazu. This battle was primarily fought in the area around Amba Aradam which included most of Enderta Province. Amba Aradam
Amba Aradam is a table mountain in northern Ethiopia. Located in the Debub Misraqawi (Southeastern) Zone of the Tigray Region, between Mek'ele and Addis Abeba, it has a latitude and longitude of and an elevation of . The name in Tigrinya is ''Imba Aradom'', but international usage in geology ( Amba Aradam Formation) and history (battles in the 1930s) have coined the name ''Amba Aradam''. Geology The outcropping bedrock consists of Jurassic, sub-horizontally layered or slightly inclined, marine varicoloured marls and marly clays with interbedded limestones, sandstones and gypsum layers, that are part of the Agula Shales Formation. Giorgio Marincola
Giorgio Marincola (23 September 1923 – 4 May 1945) was a Somali-Italian partisan who was killed in the last days of the Second World War. He is believed to be the only Somali to have earned the Gold Medal of Military Valour, Italy's second highest military award for gallantry. Biography Born in Somalia to an Italian father, Giuseppe Marincola (1891–1956), and a Somali mother, Aschirò Hassan (1901–?), he was brought to Italy with his sister, Isabella Marincola (1926–2010) in 1926 and initially sent to Calabria to live with his paternal uncle and aunt. In 1933, he came to Rome to live with his father and sister and began middle school. Line C (Rome Metro)
Line C is a Rome Metro line which runs from Monte Compatri-Pantano in the eastern suburbs of Rome, in Italy, to San Giovanni near the city centre, where it meets Line A. It is the third metro line to be built in the city and the first to be fully automated. The first section, between Monte Compatri-Pantano and Parco di Centocelle, opened on 9 November 2014. The second, from Parco di Centocelle to Lodi, opened on 29 June 2015. The third, from Lodi to San Giovanni, opened on 12 May 2018.
