Poromitra Megalops
''Poromitra'' is a genus of ridgeheads. The 22 known species of Poromitra have been divided into five species groups according to variation in preopercle anatomy. A Poromitra curilensis specimen from the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, obtained on October 7, 1968, marks the first discovery of a Poromitra member in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. George Brown Goode
George Brown Goode (February 13, 1851 – September 6, 1896), was an American ichthyologist and museum administrator. Early life and family George Brown Goode was born February 13, 1851, in New Albany, Indiana, to Francis Collier Goode and Sarah Woodruff Crane Goode. He spent his childhood in Cincinnati, Ohio and Amenia, New York. He married Sarah Ford Judd on November 29, 1877. She was the daughter of Orange Judd, a prominent agricultural writer. Together, they had four children: Margaret Judd, Kenneth Mackarness, Francis Collier, and Philip Burwell. He graduated from Wesleyan University and studied at Harvard University. In addition to his scientific publications, Goode wrote Virginia Cousins: A Study of the Ancestry and Posterity of John Goode of Whitby'where he traced his ancestry back to John Goode, a 17th-century colonist from Whitby. Poromitra Crassiceps
''Poromitra crassiceps'', commonly called the crested bigscale (also called large-headed midnight fish, crested melamphid, or one-horned melamphaid) is a species of deep sea fish in the ridgehead family. While the fish with the common name crested bigscale in Alaskan waters had formerly been identified as ''P. crassiceps'', it is now believed that Alaskan crested bigscales are actually '' Poromitra curilensis'', and that ''P. crassiceps'' is restricted to the Atlantic Ocean. As a result of this mis-identification, ''P. crassiceps'' is occasionally identified as the largest ridgehead - while specimens of ''P. curilensis'' as large as 18 cm SL have been found, the maximum length of ''P. crassiceps'' is 14.8 cm SL. Although almost no light penetrates to the deep sea from the surface, the crested bigscale has evolved features that make it practically invisible. Samuel Garman
Samuel Walton Garman (June 5, 1843 – September 30, 1927), or "Garmann" as he sometimes styled himself, was an American naturalist and zoologist. He became noted as an ichthyologist and herpetologist. Biography Garman was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, on 5 June 1843. In 1868 he joined an expedition to the American West with John Wesley Powell. He graduated from the Illinois State Normal University in 1870, and for the following year was principal of the Mississippi State Normal School. In 1871, he became professor of natural sciences in Ferry Hall Seminary, Lake Forest, Illinois, and a year later became a special pupil of Louis Agassiz. He was a friend and regular correspondent of the naturalist Edward Drinker Cope, and in 1872 accompanied him on a fossil hunting trip to Wyoming.
