Poppy Maskill
Poppy Willow Maskill (born 22 March 2005) is a British Paralympic swimmer. Maskill competes in the S14 (classification), S14, SM14 and SB14 classifications for swimmers with intellectual impairments. She won three gold and two silver medals at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris, making her Great Britain at the 2024 Summer Paralympics, ParalympicsGB's most successful athlete at the Games. Early life Maskill was born in 2005 in Cheshire and grew up in Middlewich. She has two sisters. She was chosen as the Middlewich Rose Queen in 2014, when she was nine. Butterfly Stroke
The butterfly (shortened to fly) is a List of swimming styles, swimming stroke swum on the chest, with both arms moving symmetrically, accompanied by the butterfly kick (also known as the "dolphin kick") along with the movement of the hips and chest. It is the newest swimming (sport), swimming style swum in competition, first swum in the early 1930s and originating out of the breaststroke. Speed and ergonomics The butterfly stroke boasts a higher peak velocity than the front crawl, owing to the synchronous propulsion generated by the simultaneous pull/push of both arms and legs. However, due to the pronounced drop in speed during the recovery phase, it is marginally slower than the front crawl, especially over extended distances. 2023 World Para Swimming Championships
The 2023 World Para Swimming Championships was the 12th edition of the World Para Swimming Championships, an international swimming competition for swimmers with disabilities. It was held in Manchester, Great Britain from 31 July to 6 August 2023. This was the third time that Great Britain have hosted the World Para Swimming Championships with Glasgow hosting in 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships, 2015 and London hosting in 2019 World Para Swimming Championships, 2019. The World Championships serves as a Swimming at the 2024 Summer Paralympics – Qualification, qualifier for the 2024 Summer Paralympics where two top swimmers in each individual medal event final will be automatically selected to compete at the Paralympics. Rose Queen (or Apple Queen, Cotton Queen or Harvest Queen) is a local or regional tradition associated with Whitsun processions or June festivals and fêtes similar to May Queen. Great Britain competed at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris, France, from 28 August to 8 September 2024. This was Great Britain's seventeenth consecutive time competing at the Summer Paralympic Games since the 1960 Summer Paralympics, first Games in 1960. S14, SB14, SM14 are para-swimming classifications used for categorising swimmers based on their level of disability. Definition This classification is for people with intellectual disabilities. History The classification was created by the International Paralympic Committee. In 2003 the committee approved a plan which recommended the development of a universal classification code. The code was approved in 2007, and defines the "objective of classification as developing and implementing accurate, reliable and consistent sport focused classification systems", which are known as "evidence based, sport specific classification".
