Polvo (CD)
Polvo is an American indie rock band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The band formed in 1990 and is fronted by guitarists/vocalists Ash Bowie and Dave Brylawski, with Steve Popson playing bass guitar and Brian Quast playing drums. Eddie Watkins was the band's original drummer, but did not rejoin the band upon its reunion in 2008, after breaking up in 1998. Biography Formation and early releases Polvo formed in 1990 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States. Their original lineup consisted of vocalists/guitarists Ash Bowie and Dave Brylawski, bassist Steve Popson, and drummer Eddie Watkins. Bowie and Brylawski met in a Spanish class at the University of North Carolina and shared an affinity for music released by SST Records and local rock band Let's Active. Greenpoint is the northernmost neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. ''Celebrate the New Dark Age'' is an EP by Polvo. Background & Release It was recorded at Duck Kee Studios by Jerry Kee and released on Merge Records in 1994. Reception The AllMusic review is quite positive, with reviewer Tracy Frey calling it "filled with the band's chaotic, twisted guitars and sarcastic, witty lyrics." The tracks "Fractured (Like Chandeliers)" and "Tragic Carpet Ride" were singled out as "two amazing guitar songs" and "Every Holy Shroud" was compared to Pavement. Robert Christgau gave the EP a one-star "honorable mention" indicating "a worthy effort consumers attuned to its overriding aesthetic or individual vision may well like", picking "Fractured (Like Chandeliers)" and "Every Holy Shroud" as highlights and writing: "how dark can it be if it's so full of guitars?" Sebadoh
Sebadoh () is an American indie rock band formed in 1986 in Northampton, Massachusetts, by Eric Gaffney and Lou Barlow, with multi-instrumentalist Jason Loewenstein completing the line-up in 1989. Barlow co-created Sebadoh as an outlet for his songwriting when J. Mascis gradually took over creative control of Dinosaur Jr., in which Barlow plays bass guitar. Along with such bands as Pavement (band), Pavement, Beat Happening and Guided by Voices, Sebadoh helped pioneer a lo-fi music, lo-fi style of indie rock characterized by low-fidelity recording techniques that employed Multitrack recording, four-track cassette tape machines. Unwound
Unwound () is an American post-hardcore band formed in 1988 in Tumwater and Olympia, Washington. It presently consists of vocalist-guitarist Justin Trosper, bassist Jared Warren, drummer Sara Lund, and guitarist Scott Seckington. Originally founded by Trosper, bassist Vern Rumsey and drummer Brandt Sandeno under the name "Giant Henry," Sandeno was replaced in 1992 by Lund who performed on their debut album in 1993. Pavement is an American indie rock band that formed in Stockton, California, in 1989. For most of their career, the group consisted of Stephen Malkmus (vocals and guitar), Scott Kannberg (guitar and vocals), Mark Ibold (bass), Steve West (drums), and Bob Nastanovich (percussion, synthesizers and vocals). Half-Cocked (film)
''Half-Cocked'' is a cult music road movie, made in 1994 in Louisville, Nashville and Chattanooga. The movie tells the story of a group of high school teens who steal a van full of music equipment and pretend to be a band, called "Truckstop" (played by the band Rodan) in order to stay on the road. When the band starts playing gigs, their sound is largely inconsistent and incoherent, however, over time, the band becomes increasingly competent in their musicianship. The film puts much emphasis on the indie/alternative rock subculture. Many notable indie rock bands, such as Rodan, Polvo, Grifters, Freakwater, Versus, Slant 6, Unwound, Helium, Sleepyhead, Crain, and Ruby Falls are featured in the movie.
